Alexandra from MUZE salon in New York City and I had the pleasure of working with models on Sunday November 5th for hours diving into color pigments, the makeup of color to determine HOW to choose the right color for you. These 3 things help decide on what to choose as the END RESULT:

1. texture of your hair – the ability of your hair texture to absorb the color pigments makes a difference. If the color looks pretty today it might not look so pretty by the end of the week. There is a reason why.
2. Density – how thick your hair is or how fine
3. type of color used plays a big part in how the hair will look on you. Do you want your hair to look natural? Do you need gray coverage without the blandness but you hate the red or orange tones that you see? We have color that acts like a stained glass window that will be light and airy. We have colors to choose from that prevents you from itching but still get gray coverage. We have hair color that might be the right color for you that will blend the gray away without having it permanent.

All of these factors and more play such an important part of choosing the right hair color for you. After 26 years of doing hair for my clients, I’m still lucky to experience the most advanced education that is available. When our blonde model came in we learned that she had over highlighted hair that was not giving her enough color. The technique we used was not the normal foil, we had used a blended balayage technique to create cool and warm in her hair that will work with her hairstyle either straight or her natural curl. As you can see she looks younger and more updated with her look. She learned how to create the curls that are soft and bouncty. Styling with the right products that are healthy can add to maintaining and preventing the hair color from fading.

Our second model came in with what appeared to be very dark hair. It was dark with box color that was applied over super highlighted hair that she loved. Unfortunately, after we did a strand test (yes, we still do those to prevent your hair from having a chemical haircut) We did a balayage that was natural and used a more gentle approach to a burgundy wine color that had juicy shots of bright auburn fall color throughout the ends. Her hair was breaking in the front where she braids and pulls it back. We spoke about cleansing the hair with a purify shampoo, or nioxin cleansing shampoo to prevent buildup from well water or product buildup.

Fine hair is different than thin hair although the terms are used interchangeably. Fine hair is just less dense hair. Thin hair can be determined not as healthy as normal hair. When we are born our hair starts out with 13 layers to it,  naturally. The more wear and tear on the hair as we go through stages in life by blow dying (mechanical damage), the less layers we have.

Ready for your hair color and haircut Spring makeover?

Look at this transformation from our very own stylist, Zach, from Indulge Salon on East Market Street York, Pa. He has been doing these amazing Spring hair transformations with our clients that come in with brassy, same color tones without contrast or interest.

He livened up her haircut with a french haircutting technique that complements her face shape and lifestyle.

One of our newest client additions to our Indulge family is Daria Kostyleff. He felt honored that she came to him asking to get rid of her brassy gold hair. She is newly in love and wanted to have a “revamping” of her hair. Zach was on it in a second by offering up some changes with the following:

It takes a lot of advanced skill to create these types of hair transformations. Zach has done advanced training in balayage highlights, hair color correction, and hair color formulations. Even with all of this knowledge, it is important to note that taking care of a new hair color is similar to buying a silk dress that is an investment and you want to keep in good condition as long as possible. We always will recommend shampooing with our non sulfate shampoo and conditioner that helps maintain the color pigments preventing them from leaving the hair. You wouldn’t want to wash that silk expensive dress in generic washing solution. It would make the dress fade and become dull just like hair becomes after repeatedly washing with generic over the counter drug store products that tend to make the the hair color fade.

the NEW GRAY hair

Gray hair has been the hottest trend this season. From darkest gray to lightest platinum and all of it between, we are seriously enjoying this season.

Along with clients asking us to strip out their natural color, colored hair, box colored hair and highlighted hair to make the into a platinum blonde doesn’t come without challenges. This is why I’m writing this article tonight.

Gray hair is the absence of pigment. MOST OF THE TIME. Gray hair can fool a stylist when it turns yellow. When we are faced with the option of going gray with clients, we tell them most of the clients want to get rid of their gray because they feel old. The newest generation of trend setters tell me, get rid of the natural color I want to see what I look like with gray hair. We talk about skin tone, we talk about makeup changes that will compliment your new hair color.

During the consultation, we discuss the maintenance of your hair NEW GRAY haircolor. Every 4 weeks you will either have to have your roots touched up or a color balance to maintain the pretty tones of the gray colors we chose together. Remember, the NEW GRAY hair may have had dimensional tones to give your skin tone the best look with some lighter pieces and some darker pieces.

four weeks. We pre-lighten her hair to a very pale blonde that has to be lifted just right without damage. As a specialist and authority in highlighting and hair color correction,  I used 3 different tones of gray hair color to make this look like one color. I did the base color one type of gray, the middle of the hair with a special techniqe and lastly a third gray hair color to give the shine on the ends with a slight violet tone. All of our haircolor has shine pigment in it and durable lasting pigments in the color without the weight or opaqueness that can come with certain color lines.

At Indulge Salon, we have special additives that we can place inside the color that acts like a honeycomb. Pretty cool huh? When we add this additive, we can actually place different color tones right on top of each other without compromising the other color to prevent what we call bleeding or blending within the other color. Each of these colors are entirely separate of each other when I use this additive.

As you can see on Amy Harlacker, there is no beginning on ending line of highlights because they all meld into each other. Very difficult to do but love the end result. She drives 5 hours to have her hair done. We love her! Thanks for making us look good Amy!
