Hair extensions were used to give length plus tonal change. These red hair extensions last about 4 – 5 months with the correct hair care management.

No matter if you want Terra Cotta hair color, Auburn red hair color, chestnut brown with red highlights, strawberry red hair color, we can make it happen. If you choose to rock out the hair with rainbow red mixed with pink, we can do it!

Time that is needed to remove old pigment is needed when you come in with old box color or from “another” salon. I found that removing the old color will give a better foundation for the new tones that we will be putting in your hair. We have this really cool color pigment remover that only removes the artificial pigment but doesn’t affect the natural hair color.

This process does take 45 minutes regardless of what we do to your hair, it’s all in the preparation. Sometimes, I get the client that says, “I’ve been here for 5 hours….” I respond with, “yes, you have but that is what it takes when we remove color, shampoo, the we have to condition it with the correct protein enriched color or filling the color with the missing pigment.” So when you are in the salon that long, know that good things take lots of time and lots of knowledge to get you the result that you are looking for.

I coach my team that we never rush the progress. You as a client need to prepare with expectations. No rushing, no pressure on the stylists because we may be working with other clients while you are processing but it doesn’t mean you are any less important. Clearly, we have a difficult job to do.

Our relationships with our clients are very important. This is why we let you know what we are doing every step of the way. We may have an assistant cleanse a few times, or another stylist may be applying color in certain areas. We do what it takes to care for your hair.

How do I make my red hair stay longer?

Unfortunately, red hair color is tough to keep in according to the FDA. The red dye is regulated in the United States. Mostly RED DYE #7 is questionable. The United States has gotten more creative with their dyes. There are only so many dyes that are used in hair color especially red hair color dye.

Over the years with advanced private training under my belt, I’ve learned that no matter which color is used in the red hair color zone, you will need to visit the salon within 2 – 3 weeks from the initial hair color application. Then we keep submitting the red glossy tones to keep the pigment in the hair. All I can say is that it’s totally worth the effort in the beginning for a long term result.

We have some color pigments that will stay what seems like FOREVER! Then when you want to try something new it won’t leave like a bad boyfriend. We do everything we can to remove the old red pigment so be 100% sure that you want red hair color because we will make it happen for you.

What if I get tired of my red hair color?

Good question. As I said in the previous comments be sure of which red hair color that you want. What if you decided that red is not for you? Whether it’s box color, salon color, it can be removed with a product that actually will lighten the pigment out of the hair. Depending on the health of the hair, this process may take multiple appointments. Red color that is lightening can get stuck in the orange stage which isn’t pretty. If this happens, we have to change the color to deposit to either enhance or neutralize the color for the time being.

As the hair starts lightening, the hair will go through layers of lightening like red orange, orange, yellow and depending on how light you want the hair it may decide to not lighten anymore than it can withstand. We will only lighten as long as the hair will keep it’s integrity.

My team at Indulge Salon, York, Pa did on March 31st. We gathered our overnight things, packed them into the car, gave family hugs and kisses and off we went. Some of our team couldn’t travel due to babysitters but they were with us in spirit. On April 1, 2019, we had been sitting in the conference room waiting anxiously to see my new crush celebrity stylist, Chris Appleton.

My sisters love Kim Kardashian and her family. My daughter loves to watch the Kardashian’s and when I tell you that this conference room held many Kim Kardashian wannabe’s. I was one of them. They looked like her, their makeup looked like her and these women stopped at nothing with clothing to look like her. It was a miracle to see. Our team had a huge opportunity to meet celebrity stylist Chris Appleton originally from London, England, He started out doing his mother’s hair since he was eight years old. One of his favorite memories of his childhood was after he was finished styling his mother’s hair she would sit up higher and love herself in that moment. This is what he remembered.

He went on to look for mentors and to accelerate his craft. Year after year he would work for free, he would assist others until one day a friend of his said J Lo needs a stylist. From that point on it was history. As a celebrity stylist you get crazy questions coming from event crowds like the one we were in Long Island, New York.

One of the 500 attendees either a salon owner or stylist had asked a question that was super personal to the celebrity stylist. He responded shocked but kept it together because he admitted he has never been asked the question before. He collected himself  by answering questions that pertained to “how he got where he is”. He did nothing but make people feel comfortable and answered eloquently that he worked hard and that the assistant that he has to hire to help him prepare for a shoot, hair extensions he has to pay for clients is on him, then he has to be able to communicate what the celebrity  wants to make the session 100% success.

In the above photo, celebrity stylist, Chris created the wet look on dryer hair. Even as stylists we assume that we will do this type of look on wet hair but alas it’s dry hair. He shared that doing a look like this on wet hair makes it to heavy. You can’t be afraid to try new looks. The whole creation of the makeup, the feeling that you are striving for then helps create the look of hair whether red carpet ready or just going for dinner or doing a speaking event. You have to spend time thinking about what you want before you actually do it.

Cover photos need preparation from celebrity stylists. Between the model, the assistant, the location, the environment that the work is done in, lots of time preparing is essential for a good shoot. I was pretty enamored with his approach to ponytails. He talked about how the comfort of the client with a high ponytail was pretty essential when the hair is flinging around on stage. I thought good point. He showed us what he uses and how he does it on 4 models for the Glass look, the sportster, the ponytail and lastly the muscled up look. No matter where you go, others have opinions about your work, about you, about the environment and will minimize what it took to get you where you are today. As you move through these myths that we will be debunking about hair extensions, you will feel more comfortable and educated with your stylist when it comes to maintenance and what to expect. Myth #1. Hair Extensions will break my hair.

FACT. Hair extensions do not break off the hair. Pulling, tugging and yanking the hair can break the hair. The maintenance of the hair extensions on a daily basis with how the hair at the scalp is cared for in the proper approach will not break the hair. What you will see is that the average person sheds 80 – 100 hairs per day naturally. Those shedding hairs that are attached to the hair extension could come out depending on how strong the attached hair is to the scalp. The hair has to be brushed every day to prevent the hairs that are still attached from tangling into the other hairs that are shedding.

Every manufacturer of hair extensions has a set of instructions on how they are to be installed. If the installation is not done correctly, the hair extensions as they grow out can twist causing knotting that can cause the reaction to pull the knot out therefore tugging all of the additional weight onto the scalp causing tension and pressure to remove the knot. In some cases the extensions could “fuse” together causing a big ball of sticky glue and hair stuck together that cannot be removed but has to be cut out. There are many reasons for this situation.

Myth #2. Hair won’t grow with hair extensions.

FACT. Hair seems to grow faster because the natural hair finally has the chance to heal because the hair extensions are shielding the constant application of blow dryer, curling iron intense heat and flat iron heat. Hair on average grows 1/2″ per month. If fine hair isn’t able withstand the constant battle of heat, it can break. If the individual has medical concerns that cause hair to fall out or shed because of the side affect, then it would appear that the hair isn’t growing. Taking supplements to help assist in growth such as CollagenBlu which is a marine protein that can be taken orally does help grow hair plus give the body the additional supplement it needs for hair nutrition and energy.

Myth #3. I wont’ have to shampoo my hair extensions but once a week.

FACT. You will have to shampoo your hair 2 – 3x per week because the scalp is still underneath the hair extensions. By shampooing with a shampoo that cleans the scalp to free it of debris. Bad smells like oily scalp that hasn’t been washed in weeks could prevent hair from prematurely suffocating from buildup. Waxes, dry shampoo and other gray coverage waxes can build up as I said and clog pores.

The skin underneath is like the skin on your face and has to be cleansed. In some instances we recommend a scrub to exfoliate the buildup on the scalp. We have this conversation prior to installation about the health and care of the type of hair extensions that you will be wearing. Just like your face that needs scrubbed every day, the skin on the top of your head will need to be cleansed with non sulfate shampoo at the scalp twice. The hair mid length and ends must be cleansed too because it collects smells from the environment trapping them into the hair. It rubs on coats, car seats, pillows collecting bacteria, skin cells and will need nourishment from a conditioner. Natural hair extensions are human hair that requires a detangler, moisturizer or re-constructor depending on the type of hair that you have installed.

I have personally experienced seeing mold on the scalp from lack of shampooing properly. A strong suggestion would be to change your pillow case at least 2x per week. Don’t go to bed with your hair wet because the natural body heat and wet pillow case can attract bacteria therefore the perfect setting for mold to grow on the pillow case and at your scalp. Mold can build a habitat underneath braided wefts. Dandruff can be flaking which are dry skin cells wanting to shed normally but are trapped within the braided environment plus add to that dry shampoo or whatever styling agent is added to that little concoction. The itching is not good o watch either. Then you have skin cells underneath your fingernails… I could go on. Just wash your hair and hair extensions 2 – 3x per week. Myth #4. Since I have hair extensions I don’t have to worry about pony tailing my hair.

FACT. This would naturally feel like you can pull the hair up and be done with it however; this is far from the truth. The heavier your extensions are the more weight is on your naturally fine hair. The more weight and tension that is pulling at the same spot on your head can literally pull your hair out because of the constant pulling. A good example would be box braids, braids that are pulled tight around the hairline from years since being a child into adulthood. Just as a person that has pulled their hair in the crown from tight pony tails could cause the hair to decrease in amount of hair that grows because it can become weak.

Move the pony tail around to different parts of head during the day or week. The top right of your crown, lower bottom loose braid or pony tail will give the hair a break from tension. Only use fabric type of hair holders such as the ones we recommend from Target.com

When it comes time to install hair extensions for maintenance, we do move the hair extensions around to take the pressure off the same spot preventing the tension areas. This can be done with tape-in’s, clamp extensions monthly. Other brands that are fused will have to be carefully removed then installed as a new set in surrounding areas.

Myth #5. If I have cancer or diabetes, I can’t have hair extensions.

FACT. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Of course you can however; consideration of the type of hair extensions would need to be discussed. A quick weight loss such as gastric bypass, cancer  or diabetes will have altered the body internally maybe causing weakness in the hair. Taking supplements to strengthen the hair follicle and hair are important, eating enough protein is essential to growing hair. The greens are essential to building blocks in amino acids internally to help re grow hair. Cancer survivors normally have baby fine hair that grows in and can be attached to the hair extensions. The weight and type of hair extension has to be considered so the baby fine hair doesn’t pull out because it is a different type of hair that needs to harden. An insulated clamp/bead would be perfect for this type of hair because the insulation will protect the hair however; the weight of hair or amount of hair in each extension has to be considered because as I said, the heavy weight of 20 – 30 hairs could put to much weight on the few hairs therefore pulling it out.

I hear many of the same questions as I get consults coming into the salon. Here are a few of the questions that I get:

“will I look old if I try gray hair?”

“am I to young for gray hair?”

“how long before I can just let my hair grow out white?”

“can I stop coloring my gray hair?”

“is it easy to go from blonde to gray hair?”

“what if I have dark brown hair that I want to grow my gray hair out?”

These are just some of the questions our stylists have to answer during their consultations. No matter if you are young or mature (hee hee) the processes are still the same. We need to evaluate the health of your hair before we start any processes. If your hair is super dark we have to remove the color at the scalp and the mid length and ends to make the palette even in order to color.

Going from dark to white is a challenging process and has to be done safely. Hair can break off. Could thin out too. Part of the conversation taking our clients from orangy highlighted hair to a gray platinum or mauve shades does require a period of time to process meaning lifting and toning.

Do you want to stop coloring you hair? Maybe you do but if you let the color grow out to 1/2 way down your head that leaves you with dark brown roots with some gray in it that doesn’t look very good. I recommend talking about creating a look that can be grown out looking stylish vs growth that looks unkempt.

Tones of gray hair will look different on every single skin tone. We recommend that you choose between the darker steel tones vs platinum depending on whether you wear makeup or not. The grow out color will help us choose what is best for you plus how far your hair will lift up from the natural or orangy base color. So many factors go into creating the correct look for your skin, your lifestyle and if you can style your hair curly or straight.

Many of our clients have been surprised that they have had to spend hours day 1 just sitting and lightening up (bleaching) till we get the right tone to work with. Sometimes we even do day 2 lightening up again safely. We always consider the porosity of the hair. the ability of the hair to hold the newest gray shade and what can we do to maintain it.

Often times, our clients think its a cheap process and once you bleach out the hair, they think that we just pop a color on and that’s it till next month. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality the client is back in the salon in about 3 – 4 weeks for a toner or what we call a color balance to keep the tone and to check on the integrity of the hair. If the hair has grown out 1/4″ we have to rebleach the hair and then tone again.

If the client likes a darker root like my daughter Alex, we will leave the root along until she has a larger regrowth then we would tone down the root color and color balance the ends again to keep it in tip top shape gray hair. In this instance, it did take two days 16 hours to get Alex’s hair the way it needed to be to reach the gray tones.  Her scalp color is a brown violet color with 4 shades of gray violet, darker gray, platinum gray and a rose color.

If the hair is fragile, we will offer to do a Brazilian Blowout to seal the ends together on fragile hair. In most cases this will protect the hair and keep the gray hair color in longer.

I love that my daughter is willing to try new colors for the trends 2018. It is easy to go darker but not as easy as she thought it would be to keep her hair on the gray scale of color.

She has to use toners, conditioning treatments to keep her hair the same tone. She has baby fine hair so that makes it a little sketchy when coloring her hair with bleaches and toners. We also use a product such as Wella to help mend the bonds of her hair. Wella has superior products that are designed to rebond the hair during the processing of the bleaching or toning process.

I will say that the after care process is essential and will be part of your training to care for your hair. The hair will last about 3 months to 4 months and sometimes 6 months however I do say that with caution because you really do need to care for your hair properly to even get them to last that long. The hair will last, it’s about your hair dreams coming true by brushing the way we teach you every day. Washing your hair, conditioning the hairdreams will be taken seriously to ensure that you get the longest lasting result possible.

We will require several maintenance appointments for you to come in to cut off or trim the shedding hair that grows out of your head while you have your hairdreams extensions in your hair.

If maintenance is not done correctly, the possibility of hair matting or growing out with knots could be a high likelihood. We won’t allow that to happen on our watch but you need to do your part to keeping them in good shape.

The weight of your hair will change. The cool thing that you will be able to experience is the actual new weight of your hair equally distributed throughout your hair. I loved the way the new hair feels so soft and silk  like luxurious silk. I loved running my fingers through the hairdreams hair.

April 6, 2017, my son passed away leaving me to find more myself. The loss was so sad that I felt like I didn’t want to drag myself out of bed. I used to look at myself in the mirror talking to that “self” saying, “you need to get up, you need to move forward today and look your best.” I knew  that I had never had great hair  at any point in my life. I normally would pull it back into a pony tail that made it look thicker. I did have it cut every 6 months because the ends were straggly.

During a year that I could remember, my hair was being cut and the stylist that was cutting my hair said, “Kimberly, you don’t have any hair in the middle of the back of your head.” Of course I was stunned or couldn’t imagine my hair being that short. Unfortunately, it was true, my hair had broken off from the constant strain of being pony tailed at the same spot for 20 years. Needless to say, I cut it off shorter to make it look better. I still hadn’t learned my lesson after all of those years.

My emotions were all over the place between happy and sad or just bursting into tears from the loss I was feeling. I couldn’t think straight, wasn’t eating right and certainly hadn’t been getting enough sleep over the years but the previous two years before my son’s passing wasn’t the epitome of healthy eating. My hair was not that important to me at that time.

After he passed in April, the following months were a struggle to function. My body was tired and sleepy. I had always taken vitamins for my fine thin hair but knew that I needed to change my hair behaviors.
