Be cool as a cucumber this season. The weather has been warm and we have certainly seen some rain to nourish the rich ground. One of the primary nurses that watches over and cares for my son Carson, loves to make Cucumber Salad. Her version of it. She puts special onions and her magic sauce in it. My grandmother used to make it on the farm that creates special memories for me. I think she put vinegar in it. Other than that, I’m at a loss. Frankly, cucumbers are loaded with water which is good for your skin. It’s proven that cucumbers contain anti-inflammatory properties to reduce redness and eye puffiness. good for us that need our eye bags reduced in the nick of time. they are rich with B vitamins – B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and folic acid. The skin is mostly water but it also contains ascorbic acid which is Vitamin C plus caffeic acid. These nutrients help soothe skin irritations and reduce the swelling. thi si the primary reason that cucumbers are an ideal spa ingredient fur use internal like shakes, smoothies and water as well as topically.If your skin is red and irritated, grab a cuke from the refrigerator and lay it on the reddened area for a few minutes. The area will reduce in size if it has swelled. Nice to have your own home remedies around when you need them. Bags under the eyes are a mild swelling or puffiness under the eyes. I thought that might catch your interest. As you know, I have hit the magic years of the 40’s which is supposed to be the 30’s. Um, not sure about that statement. I feel like I’ve been working more than I ever have. I know we only have 24 hours in a single day but like you how in the world do we find time for ourselves in our 23 hour busy day doing what we do?

In your mind, your thinking well time management Kimberly. Of course, I love productivity and making the best use of my time. Unfortunately, I feel like I play catch up in many areas especially with taking care of myself. Those of you that know me personally, know that I don’t get much sleep. Some of this by choice and other nights not. Daily living can really break your skin down and so can managed stress. I really don’t think I’m stressed however according to some studies I’ve been reading maybe I might have a little.

What is really on my mind right now is my skin and how I look in the mirror to see what is looking back at me is not the 20 year old skin I used to have. It used to be firm and sunken in at the right places. Truly, I fight hard to maintain some youth by eating Hershey Golden Almond Nuggets, McDonalds soda in the morning, five workouts a week and taking some really potent vitamins and supplements through Advocare. I started searching out the best supplements to help my skin from premature aging due to stress and lack of sleep. What I found was vitamins that athletes use to maximize their performance. I feel like I’m a performer every day and that I needed some extra help. I feel so much better which leads me back to the topic at hand, my facial skin.

I have been using Guinot skin care for years now. Is it a miracle overnight to moisturize and hydrate, yes but these products do much more than that surface activity. I know everyone wants to look younger in fifteen minutes but it “ain’t” happening as we say in York County, PA. Nope, you need to look at this from a different angle. The cool thing about women and networking is that women like to help women. They will give suggestions on whom to see as far as professional due to their own experiences. Heart disease is more common among women and more genetically passed through the family. The reason it runs through the families is because family members make the same mistakes in eating fatty foods, not enough exercise, and fall into the same patterns. Isn’t that great news? We can change our future by better choices. Some better choices may be:

a. Eat more nutrient rich foods. Eat seven to nince servings of fruit and veggies per day. Save all of your baked and friedc foods for the occasional treat. This basically keeps your cholesterol and blood pressure down.

b. GET SOME EXERCISE every day. Get out of the mind set that if your not going to the gym or doing the entire workout with DVD, you may as well not bother. I used to have this mindset myself. Since I started working out since last October, 2011 I used to do 5-6 days a week for about 1 hour. Now I realized and educated myself that I do not need to do that many days or that long of a period. Our bodies were designed to be rigorous to catch our meal by running after it in short spurts. I know, now we just pull up to the window or throw it in the microwave. How many calories do you burn doing that? Good cardio in shorter times will be so much more effective and better for your heart. After reading the “Paleo Diet” I learned that really if we did these exercises in shorter spurts we sweat and burn calories quicker and the body responds. Even if you feel like you can’t get through 30 minutes, just tell yourself I will get better, with more practice, I will master this work out. You should have seen me in the beginning. I could hardly get my legs up in a V and hold them there. Today, I can do it with no problem. JUST START. You can do this in 30 minutes three days per week. You will still maintain even if you feel the need for a Hershey Golden Almond Nugget. (my fave)

c. If you smoke, QUIT IT! smoking damages the protective lining around the arties. That totally sucks and you are causing. Change your mindset by choosing to replace it with some other activitiy that keeps your hands busy and your mind busy instead of the habit. Otherwise, you will go back to your bad stinky habit.

d. Sing opera out loud. You can do this in the shower or the car or sing wherever. Crazy but it lowers your blood pressure by as much as 25 percent. This is according the Harvard scientists. With higher blood pressure, the heart has to work harder which leads to heart attack.

e. Get to the dentist regularly. I’ve learned that a party of bacteria can lead to heart disease. My son used to take an antibiotic 1/2 hour before his dental appointment to prevent any bacteria that may have accumulated which can affect the heart. That nasty bacteria of the mouth can lead to a stroke or heart attack. Taking care of your mouth every three months even for a cleaning can prevent heart disease by 24 percent.

f. Laugh more. Life is to serious. Try 30 minutes of laughing at sitcoms or a favorite video opens up those arteries. Who knew? Being happy and telling yourself to be happy is by far a better healer than getting sucked into the negativity. Choose to be happy. When you are happy and doing small things for yourself such as having a facial treatment or a nail service or something that gives you happy endorphins puts good stuff in your veins naturally which will reduce any long term negative affects that would require medication. Allows your blood to flow freely and reduces your blood pressure, according to the study published in the American Journal of Cardiology. This technique lasts up to 24 hours.

Salon York PA Here goes…another perspective on weight gain and guess where this one comes from? You guessed it. Artificial light. Back in the day when we had to run after our food for the nightly meal cooking over the fire pit, we now are accustomed to eating our meals indoors and by artificial light bulbs. Can you imagine we as humans used to spend 10 hours a day outdoors? That would be until Edison popped out the magical light bulb. The natural light regulated our circadian rhythms and energized our brain cells and bodies.

Today we spend less than 30 minutes a day or a mere 3 hours per week in the daylight, according to Daniel Kripke, M.D. He has said that our circadian rhythms are dependent on light entering our eyes to regulate our body’s natural master clock. According to the quality and quantity of light received, key hormones and neurotransmitters like serotinin and melatonin are release in the brain to set our daily rythms. I can really relate to this due to my son being up at night for hours and I have a light or the computer light on which would affect my weight over the years. Certainly you feel more energized when you are outside and have the fresh air on my face. Today, most people suffer from mal-illumination which means lack of enough daily natural sunlight and too much indoor artificial light, especially at night.

The results of being out of our rythm can be:

  • weight gain
  • fatigue
  • depression,
  • headaches
  • pain
  • hormonal imbalances
  • sleep disorders
  • pms
  • lowered immune responses
  • vitaminD/calcium deficients and lack of vitality

Is there any wonder we are having skin and health issues. The average american will gain 8.5 lbs and get type 2 diabetes. Even if excerising, we must avoid artificial fats (no fun) and the other bad stuff but essentially turn off the light at night will help regulate your body rythm. this is a good start to losing weight. The artificial light tricks our bodies into thinking it’s the season to eat all year round adn gain weight. Traitors to our own body.

Something we think is so simple by getting sleep will help the insulin be regulated, the cortisol be regulated just by getting regular sleep. Think about it.

Salon York PA Did you know that women fantasize about getting enough sleep every night? I certainly didn’t. I found this informative article in Allure issued April 2011. Commenting on sleep is a Darrell S. Rigel, clinical professor of dermatology of New York University Langone Medical Center in New York City.

We are supposed to be getting average of seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Getting the proper amount of sleep will prevent the following: Sagging skin – “blood pressure is higher when you’re awake, and this causes fluids from your blood vessels to leach into your skin and stretch it slightly.” “over time, skin stays stretched. When you sleep, fluids in your face are absorbed into the body, but if you don’t get enough the fluids never fully reabsorb.

The effects are more noticeable around the eyes where the skin is thinner. Permanent dark circles – of course the same fluids that didn’t drain cause puffiness also deposit red blood cells in skin, which stay there and show through as permanent circles. He suggests using eye creams with L-absorbic acid will help somewhat but is not the cure all. Hyperpigmentation – my favorite since I have hit menopause in the fabulous forties.

Skimping on the sleep triggers activation of the proopiomelanocortin gene. (big word) this was commented on by dermatologist Leslie Bauman. She said, “it causes the body to produce excess pigment that can appear as freckles or spots on your face.” I can vouch for that. Think about getting more sleep girls! We have to fight our age as long as we can. Turn all of the lights off because the artificial light can keep you up at night even though your eyes are closed.

Salon York PA Hey, I wanted to let everyone know that I have worked with a formulator to create the most intensive moisturizing body butter bar – well, I think it is. We reformulated 8 times since the inception. I know it’s been a hidden secret but I was so fustrated with the moisturizers that I’ve found out there in grocery stores, boutique stores from all over and still I didn’t feel like I was getting smooth creamy skin. I still felt dry and the moisturizer in the big tub that I paid 25.00 for laid on top of my skin.

EEK! This was not good for my wrinkes which I can’t believe is happening to me. So I decided that I would make my own to my own specifications. There are a variety of fragrances because each person has their own tastes. We have Cocoa butter which is the majority of the ingredient and smells like chocolate. OF course if you are trying to watch what you are eating you can wear it instead of eating it! The other fragrances are Coconut, Citrus, and Unfragranced. These are primarily made of Ultra highly refined cocoa butter and soy so the bar lasts longer but you still get amazing moisturizing properties that penetrate the skin while you are wet in the shower.

The coolest part is that I discovered, right before you hop out of the shower you need to make sure you have massaged the butter into your skin to get the full benefit. Hop out, the cool air hits yours skin and closes it up therefore giving you the benefits of holding the moisturizer in longer. Just pat dry. They have been available at either salon. Salon York PA Why does it seem that whenever we begin a diet, we are fully intent on “finishing it,” but a week or so into the diet, results aren’t coming fast enough and we give up. The problem is that we are so used to getting instant results that we are disappointed when we don’t get what we want and get it right away. Here are a few tips on how to lose weight and not go crazy doing it:

1. Envision A Goal-Where you want to be is extremely important and knowing where you are going is the first step to any journey.

2. Pictures and Paper-Find any and all pictures of the body you are looking to have. Cut out motivating words and phrases. This is also known as a Vision Board. You’ll want to put all of your compiled pictures and words on this Vision Board. Put the board up anywhere in your house where you’ll see it every day. Constant reminders of what you want will only motivate you subconsciously to strive for your end goal.

3. Change it Up-If you have been working out at home, begin going to a gym, workout with a friend, walk/run outside, go on a hike. Do things differently. Weight loss is all dependent on you changing up your workout. Trick your muscles. Every two weeks you should be changing up your routine.

4. Challenge Yourself-If you aren’t profusely sweating during your workout, you need to put more into it. Ever hear the saying “What you put in is what you get out”? That is exactly how weight loss is, too. You’ll need to focus every minute of every workout session. Stay focused and you’ll see results. Don’t be afraid of a little soreness either. No pain, no gain.

5. Sleep-Make sure you’re getting at least 6-8 hours of meaningful sleep every night. Notice I said ‘meaningful’. You need to get in touch with your R.E.M. sleep and have at least 6-8 hours of restful uninterrupted sleep. The more you get, the more energy you will have.

6. Eat fresh-Fresh meat. Fresh veggies. Fresh fruit. All these wonderful sayings that actually are truthful-“You Are What You Eat”. Imagine that with everything you consume. You should be eating tons of green veggies, salads, proteins, and some fruits. Don’t forget that you need to always have a protein with your salads.  This means you should be having grilled chicken with salad, or some tasty salmon with green beans or peas. So Delicious!

Be prepared for each week, and make a calendar for a goal “date”. Don’t rush your lifestyle change. Embrace the changes you are making to your diet, your exercise schedule, your sleep habits. You’ll see the weight come off, but you have to stick to your goal and where you want to end up. Nothing good comes easy. So take your time and be happy with the progress you’ll be making. You’ll get to celebrate by buying smaller clothes!

Salon York PA After reading “Why Mom Wakes before Dad,” an article by LiveScience.com, I found that women have different circadian rhythms from men.  Researchers at Harvard Medical School headed up a study that looked at how easy it was for the participants to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Apparently, there are two indicators of circadian rhythm: core body temperature and levels of melatonin.  What I did not know was that the “natural circadian rhythm is reset daily by exposure to natural light.”  Perhaps, this is the reason why some people use black out curtains in their bedrooms.  I, personally, use a black out curtain in my bedroom because the light in the morning is so harsh and bright.  The curtain is especially useful on weekends when getting up early should be out of the question.  The thought also popped in my head that some people like to sleep with a fan constantly running while they sleep.  Maybe that contributes to the decrease in their core body temperature, therefore, allowing them to sleep better.

In the study, researchers found that about “35% of women had circadian rhythms shorter than 24 hours, compared to the 14% of men.”  I suppose this means that women need less sleep than men, according to the study.

There are many other factors that contribute to the way you sleep at night, however.  Some factors might be:

  1. Having caffeine before you go to sleep at night
  2. Your stress level
  3. Types of food you’re eating
  4. Comfort of your bed
  5. Whether you’re hot or cold
  6. Body pain
  7. Etc.

I have heard that if you read a book or magazine before you go to sleep that it encourages your body to relax.  I always remember my grandmother drinking hot tea before going to sleep also.
