This Ariel mermaid from “The Little Mermaid” is one of my favorite colors to create for my client. This client enjoys the creative freedom and eccentric feeling that she got from this red hair color. This color requires some very technical strategy fro removing her natural color to a lighter shade in order for the color to show up to this level of vibrancy and evenness. Red hair color is hard to keep around like that new date that you met and want to keep calling but they avoid your calls. Red hair color is  a little more maintenance than the usual root touch up.

Think of your red hair color as friends that are coming to a party that you are excited to spend time with. In fact, you want those red hair color friends to spend the night! Brielle Carbaugh came into salon with spotty colors trying to color her own hair and left with beautiful dimensional auburn reddish brown hair from Indulge salon

She is a good student but tired of her hair color. She and her grandmother went shopping and while out Brielle is ready for her adventure and picks up some red violet shaded hair color that appeals to her on a “box”. She applies her color, unbeknownst to mom, to discover it didn’t cover everywhere and it faded. Mom comes home to discover her NEW transformed Brielle!

I happen to know Brielle’s mother whom is delightful and cool. Mom decides they needed to get her new hair color fixed. They pop in to see me at our South George Street location to see what could be done.

Brielle had uneven color application with spotty results

Step 1. We started with analyzing her hair to see what we should do first. As you can see she had some highlights from a previous color that were peeking out along with faded out red violet colors that were intermingled along the hair shaft. She had some natural hair color at the scalp too. To make our color challenge even more exciting, we had to look at the health of her hair which effects the end result.

Phase 2 – filling her hair

Step 2.  We were contemplating removing all color off the hair which could have caused more maintenance. Instead we strategically evened out the color which was not easy to do. As you can see we had several staff members helping us. Working with hair color correction can be challenging because of the previous color, water influences, product buildup and especially how the hair is maintained.

Step 3. We weren’t satisfied with the quality of the how the hair absorbed the haircolor. We had to reapply the color to fill the hair to get an even fabric so to speak. We were pretty happy with the 2nd application of color tone we added.

As you can see, the results were much better and the hair is even as best we could while keeping her hair in good condition. If you are reading this, you have to understand we are working with so many elements in the hair that we have to make decisions based on hair texture, quality of the hair, porosity (ability to take in moisture and hold it) vitamins, well water and anything else that is taken inside the body which can coat the hair preventing the hair color to absorb. Sometimes the hair will not take anymore color into it. Hair color correction takes time and is not a quick fix usually especially if you want your hair to look natural.

Step 4. We felt that we needed to have a more natural look to her hair by adding some darker auburn without what we call “browning” it out. This ended up being beautiful with the BLURRING of color technique that appears to blend the hair. This technique allowed our newly transformed Brielle to let her hair fade naturally without damaging her hair and keeping it from turning that ugly orange color that can happen when the hair is not properly cared for. This actually happens by many clients more often than not. Even so, looking at the photo of her phase 3, she still has a beautiful shine to it. As you can see the “after” photos are just gorgeous from root to ends with a healthy shine and gloss to the hair. All of this was done with safe deposit only color that actually gives her hair more protein without the weight.

I had THE most wonderful day today doing some beautiful hair color on different styles of women. Some love their long hair, short hair and men and their shorter styles. I love the most particular discerning clients and they love me at our salon on South George Street, York PA.

I need to clear some things up for you when it comes to hair color conversation. Here  we go:

1. a “root touch up” is the new hair that has grown out from the scalp and needs some color applied to it.

2. a color balance, glazing, glossing is a color service that is applied from the mid lengths to ends. If we need more hair color mixed because your hair is longer or thicker, we have to charge you more for it.

3. partial highlights is the top of the head with two packets on each side of the face nearest the framing of the face to enhance your bones and overall appearance.

4. full highlights is the foil packets all over the head in a strategic pattern that will give you the result that you are looking for. After the highlights have processed, then the stylist will apply whats called a toner to tone the hair a more pastel color which makes the original color look shinier and brighter.

5. hair color glazing is a full bodied semi permanent color that will stain the hair for about 6-8 weeks and will need to be refreshed especially if the hair color is red because red fades the fastest because of the red die #7 thata is primarily used in Europe and not in the states.

The next time you are in the salon and you have a question about price or what the service will do for you, ask the stylist and they will be more than happy to get the aswer for you. In some cases with hair color that is going from blonde to dark, we will have to place a filler on the hair to help hold the darker color. If you choose not to have this applied to your color, your hair color will fade no matter how many tines you come in to the salon. Must have blonde hair filled to make the darker brown or brown reds to stay.

I’ve been noticing to many DIY’s. Shame to because the girls that I see are prettier but their hair is messed up trying to do these videos and well it makes us professionals look bad because we have spent thousdands of dollars towards our education to make educated decisions towards your hair and makeup. Client wanted to make her long hair shimmer with red violet highlights with darker color. We did this at our South George Street location.

As a master colorist at Indulge Salon working at our South George Street location, I’m finding that our clients want to really express themselves with red highlights that are vibrant orange reds, red red and red violet tones that are amazing for the skin tone when done correctly.

I hope this blog article helps you decide what you would like to have when you speak to one of our stylists. When you see a photo of a model, the photo comes with lots of alterations professionally to it such as lighting and where the hair is positioned to show off the best lights of the color and haircut. The hair is prepared at great length with hair color that is designed to give depth or lightness then maybe another shade of lightner or depth added to create “the look”. Then the hair may be glazed for intense shine.

More often haircolor and styles had taken hours to perfect. When I did the last photo shoot in Chicago, we had a photographer from Iraq to show us the nuances of editorial and photo work. The way the hair and skin looked in the frame of the camera. I can tell you this was hard work between the makeup, the haircut, the color, and creating a feeling behind the camera. The clothing person whom they call the stylist was more important when you see clothing but overall, its about the look and feeling that is created.

I digress a bit however my point is that its not just a once and done process. For example, tonight I had to have the hair pre-lightened to an orange color just to prepare for the next part of the process. I had to prestain the color to an intense orange in order to help the main vibrant color I wanted to stay. Again, this chemical process with color dyes that we use are important that require thought and strategic planning when performing the artistry of hair color. After the 2nd color that I applied on my orange red vixen, she was thrilled to have shiny beautiful hair color that she has always wanted with black tips. I said, “my pleasure”.

Red heads need to be maintained more frequently. I highly recommend about every 2-3 weeks to keep the vibrancy and tone to the desired shade.
