Professional hair stylists hear this question all the time, and the answer is not as clear as you might think. There are many contributing factors: pre-care, the application process, the drama of your color change, the salon you choose and the aftercare you invest in. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the most pertinent issues relating to highlighted hair and damage, so that you have the knowledge you need to protect your hair.

Do Highlights Ruin Your Hair?

Almost every decision you make about your hair will have an impact on its health. It may surprise you to learn that 9 out of 10 women do something damaging to their hair every single day. This can include:

  • Tying hair tightly.
  • Brushing too roughly.
  • Dyeing.
  • Highlighting.
  • Heat styling without adequate protection.
  • Exposure to UV rays.
  • Exposure to pollution.
  • Chemical treatments.

Highlights absolutely can have a negative effect on your hair if you don’t take the right steps. At Indulge Salon, we prioritize the health of your hair and will ensure your hair is taken care of before teaching you how to continue that care at home. This way, we can prevent long-lasting damage such as breakage, weakness and dullness, and maintain the beautiful, highlighted look you desire.

The reason that highlights have the potential to damage your hair is that they strip your hair of its natural pigment. This can have the side effect of altering the balance of natural oils and proteins in your hair, depleting the factors that can give your hair a healthy shine. You might notice your hair becomes dry, brittle or frizzy after highlighting, but there are ways to mitigate this and to repair any existing damage.

Pre-Treatments Can Strengthen the Hair Shaft

An effective way to prevent the damage caused by highlighting is to harness the power of a pre-treatment that works on the hair from the inside outwards. Bond-building treatments work deep in the hair shaft to strengthen each strand and protect it from the drying effects of highlights.

Whether you want balayage or baby-lights, your stylist can mix the right amount of pre-treatment to protect your hair as the highlighter develops. They will then follow up with a bond-stabilizer after rinsing out the lightener, which will further strengthen your hair and rebalance the pH level after coloring.

After a good shampoo and conditioner, your hair will be ready for the next stage of styling, with strong and healthy highlights.

Blonde Without the Bleach?

It’s absolutely fine to want to explore lighter shades for your hair and equally want to avoid bleach. Bleach is undeniably a cause of damage to hair and takes a lot of looking after to maintain the best condition of your hair after treatment.

Luckily, there is a range of products that can lighten hair to different degrees without the chemical nature of bleach. For example, Koleston Perfect’s Special Blondes palette aims to lighten and tone the hair in a single step while maintaining natural beauty and a stunning shine.

Personalized color results are our specialty – we want you to feel magnificent in your color, so use your consultation as an opportunity to explore the options available to you, whether that involves bleach lightening or it’s something you want to stay away from.

Put Space into Your Color Schedule

A good way to avoid damaging your hair is to take your time with color change. Of course, you want to achieve your end-product look, but rushing from A to Z is sure to increase your risk of dry and damaged hair. If your hair is dark, you shouldn’t expect to see full lightening after just one session – and don’t book your subsequent session too soon, either.

Your stylist will advise you on how many sessions will likely be needed to achieve your final look and advise on how long to leave between highlights to maximize the health of your hair. Regrowth will start to become visible between seven and eight weeks after an initial appointment, so this is the minimum time we’d ask you to consider between highlighting appointments.

Combined with a stringent pre-color routine and after-care treatment, you should expect to have a beautiful, ultra-natural head of hair no matter how far along your color journey you are.

Care for Your Highlights at Home

Consider these tips to care for your highlights between appointments:

  • Reduce how often you Wash Your Hair: This may sound counterintuitive (of course, you want clean and shiny hair!), but overwashing can reduce the natural oils in your hair that protect the scalp from irritation and the hair from damage.
  • Choose Your Hair Towel Carefully: Traditional towels pull at the hair when drying and can increase frizz, so we encourage the use of a microfiber towel. These are gentler on hair, whether it is highlighted or not and can actually dry your hair faster than traditional towels.
  • Reduce Heat Styling: Blow dryers, flat irons and curling irons on high heat can all exacerbate the problems of dryness and brittleness brought about by highlighting. Reduce the frequency of heat styling, reduce the temperature you style with, and choose high-quality heat-protecting products.
  • Invest in a Silk Pillowcase: Cotton pillowcases can contribute to frizz and dryness, so consider switching to silk, which will allow your hair to slide over it as you sleep. This can reduce tangles and breakage, as well as reduce dryness.
  • Listen to Your Stylist’s Recommendations on Hair Products: At Indulge Salon, we have extensive knowledge of the right products to support happy and healthy hair. If you have questions, talk to your stylist and ask all the questions you need to understand your haircare.

Conclusion

In summary, highlights can cause damage to your hair, but it’s not a forgone conclusion that they will ruin or irreparably damage it. There are many steps you can take to protect your hair prior to the highlighting process, and at Indulge Salon, you can be reassured that your stylist will take every possible step to reduce and prevent damage during your color treatment journey.

We have the knowledge and expertise to teach you how to take the best care of your highlighted hair, so that it can be the crowning glory you deserve without the damage that is so often associated with highlighting.

Bring on the new year new you for 2018Kimberly Acworth

Ready to try a new haircut and color

A part of letting go of the previous year is the art of allowing space for the new ideas for 2018. Feeling good about yourself for the new year is just as important as setting new goals. The saying, ” when you feel good,  you look good is so true.” According to the magazine HAIR PREVIEW 2018, the votes are in go for the bold, the pretty + daring = a new you! Apparently their are 523 New looks that you can take advantage of just in this magazine with cool colors of blue, pastel pinks, aqua or try some shiny wave hair techniques with wands or edge crops for short hair, or try some new styling options of part up and down with some braids.

Will losing weight affect my haircut?

Dropping unhealthy pounds will affect your current haircut because the hair can droop plus if you are cutting back on your proteins you may find that you lose hair along the way that is more than normal. I caution you to prevent the loss of hair with large amounts of weight loss to keep up with your protein supplements such as CollagenBlu is available here.  Collagenblu is derived from shellfish naturally with a boost of Vitamin C from Ascerola Cherries. We believe in Collagenblu because it counts as a protein serving according to Weight Watchers. Keep in mind that you still need your dark green vegetables such as kale, spinach, okra, and green beans. A nice supplement to your dietary needs can be adjusted by eating lentil beans, dark red or black kidney beans. With drastic weight loss, your face shape will slim around the cheeks and jawline allowing you to wear many more styles that suit your face shape and lifestyle.

As you feel more confident in your clothes, your new year new you attitude will be the perfect set up for a new haircut that will be shaped to your new face shape.

Working with an expert hairstylist, makeup artist, waxer, hair extensionist  can make a big difference in your transformation for 2018. Looking your best does not have to be expensive. A new look for a new year represents  new perspectives on:

  • what do you want to DO out of your life this year?
  • who do you want to BE this year?
  • what do you want to HAVE  in your life or remove out of your life

I personally found this thought provoking experience with a client that had a particularly bad 2017. Her hair was knotted up into two bunches that were not able to be removed. These knots looked like two horns sticking out of the back of head. These knots were from not combing her hair on a regular basis that one day led to another knotting the long hair into the shorter hairs that were already broken off. When this happens, it’s difficult to break these types of knots apart no matter how much conditioner is used. Then on top of the knotting, wetting the hair packs in the knots then the hair doesn’t dry totally leaving the hair smelling like wet dog. If gone unattended for to long, the scalp and hair will start to grow mold. She didn’t have mold growing however; the opportunity to grow mold could happen. This was hard for my client to let go of her hair even though it was so tightly knotted. I tried to help her with conditioner, argan oils, picking pieces of hair with a fine tooth comb in the hope of the knot letting loose. To no avail, it simply would take painstaking hours to try to remove the knot with no guarantee that it would work.

We came to the conclusion that I would have to cut through the bulk of the knots. As we spoke, I said since your 2017 was horrible then we should look at cutting out the bad stuff from her last year which would allow her to have a new outlook on her new year new look for 2018. She gritted her teeth saying she would rather have her long hair. I said, “I know but we have to let go of the old knotted hair to let the new hair grow in.” When we are going through changes its good to have our friends around to support us in our dreadful days and the good days. This client had her BFF with her. I admired their strength together.

I felt inspired from behind the scenes about cutting off the old (year) and beginning a new year with her hair.

She would learn how to take care of her hair with some new styling tools at her disposal. Even though she wasn’t happy with her short hair, she was forced to face her NEW YEAR NEW YOU  for 2018.

Such as life, we are forced to look at ourselves in ways we weren’t expecting. Just like Pastor Bob says, “Kimberly, you come in with one objective and are surprised by another that becomes more apparent.” We make the best of our world we are given.

Here is Michele’s story:

She was trying to bleach her hair to make it lighter so in her efforts to get it really light she bleached her hair out 3x leaving it on for 90 minutes. The result is that her hair broke off. As you can see in her pictures, the hair around her hairline is short.  She ended up coming into the salon for a consultation for hair extensions. She was missing her long hair and it seemed that her hair wouldn’t grow longer than a certain length.

Her visit to Indulge Salon on South George Street was with Keni, a Sr Stylist of 15 years colored her hair to match the natural hair extensions. Kimberly installed them to work with the shape of her skull and to make sure it worked for her on a day to day basis. Take a look at her results. She was so happy!

Rainbow hair color is not just Rainbow pastel hair colorfor the rebels of yester year

She wants individuality, demands a unique experience, and wants the flexibility of her conservative color for day and rainbow hair color for night.

About 30 years ago, we would have been looking at someone with red hair, purple hair any color of the rainbow hair as if they had a second head. What I realize is that these creative individuals had their own authority of ideas with their hair which was a form of expression. I wished I was more open to that back then but I wasn’t raised that way. How unfortunate because what I realize now is how much I appreciate a person that has their own authentic ideas of how they want to weave in the artistic fun in their lives. I’m all about it now. As a Master Cosmetologist, I work with all different forms of hair color along with the creativity it takes to make these looks go from conversation to reality.

Hair is a fabric of sorts. It’s porous, it’ will either accept hair color or it won’t. As  professional, we have to make a choice on the type of hair color that is used to give a result.

Rainbow hair color "during" processing Take one of my clients Sarah Lushbaugh, York Pa. she has her hair double processed then toned to a pale blonde color for years. One day she decides that she wants to have all kinds of rainbow hair color put into her hair. She calls and we talk about it. When I say we talked about it I mean we talked about the arrangement of the hair colors, which one sat next to which one and she had an elaborate creative plan about her hair. As you can tell it turned out beautiful and soft pastel looking.

We spent a few hours strategizing which colors that she had to choose from. She was pretty excited. I had taken all of the colors that she had a strong interest in applied them to a white paper towel which helps see the true tone of the hair color so that she could visualize what her hair would look like.

It turned out great for her and gave her what she wanted with her personlized rainbow hair color. The condition of her hair was excellent. Remember, this only takes on very pale blonde white hair. If the raw hair is darker, you will get a different result. We recommend working with a professional so that you can get the result that you want.

Rainbow hair color back

Sarah wanted the middle of her hair pink where there was some pale yellow underneath.

Tips on consultation with your professional hair colorist:

  1. Make sure you are comfortable with bright colors, neon colors or pastel. Communicate the type of technique such as balayage, ombre’ highlights, foil highlights or all over. list.  “In the old days of foil, clients were in the chair every four to six weeks for upkeep,” Braun says. With balayage, Braun might see a client only three to four times a year for an hour or less. The technique requires a high degree of skill that hasn’t been widely taught until recent years, although it’s been around since the late fifties. Balayage has only recently stepped into the limelight thanks to models and A-listers who love this beautiful look.
  2. Check your beauty budget. The Prep can be expensive if your hair is not as light as it should be. It’s important to be specific on the result you are looking for when it cmes to Rainbow haircolor. Doing the prep work to lighten the hair that is left in healthy condition is VERY important. If your budget doesn’t allow the entire head to be done or the length was not achievable (the longer the hair the more expensive) the the tips of the hair or the bottom area could be acomplished with an ombre’ look.
  3. Once the rainbow hair color is in the hair, it isn’t coming out right away. It stains the hair and if the colors blend into each other you may get a whole new rainbow hair color such as red and blue make purple wherever they connect.

Throw away the round brushes for summer hairstyles 2016!

Ok, you don’t have to but here is another alternative for summer.

I just read an updated article on the best summer hairstyles for 2016 indicating that the dryer you are using is considered “the olde ball and chain.” Well, this will be your season. Love this quote, “It’s time to put down your weapons of destruction” and wear your hair naturally, declaring New York City stylist David Lopez. He says, the key to effortless – (not sloppy or dirty) looking strands is using the right products for your texture and applying them at the right time.

I agree with David. In the salon, we have been working with our clients to learn how to use their products in the right areas on the head. For example, to produce natural looking wavy hair which is showing on trend, applying the EIMI FLOWING FORM gel is great mixed with Wella’s vanilla scented oil that moisturizes and keeps the curls and saves flexible without drying out. Knowing where to put the root lift for volume at the scalp only helps for volume without the frizz on the ends.

Tapping into the expertise we as professional hairstylists can provide to you for summer 2016 hairstyles is huge to manage your hairstyles at the beach, pulling it up in the ponytails, using products such as Fabuloso Pro on your hair will repair it while keeping color from fading. I will speak on this in an upcoming article. Needless to say, you need some professional advice to learn how to maximize your natural curls/waves and to learn to let it go. Again, without the sloppy look. There is a difference.

This summer’s best hairstyles are soft and natural looking, which means your morning routine just got way faster. Learn how to coax your soft waves into a style.

EIMI Root Shoot for volume

EIMI Root Shoot

Sometimes pushing the curl back in towards the scalp with the right product such as EIMI ROOT SHOOT will give lift, volume and firmness to the curl while wet but when dry softens to a beautiful bouncy curl. Super thick coarse hair? We have the best products that will soften and be more flexible without the frizz.

Still want volume at the scalp on fine thin hair?

Try EIMI RUGGED TEXTURE. Eimi Rugged Texture is one of my favorites to use a the scalp. It comes in a tube that you only need less than a dime size.

EIMI Rugged Texture matte to give volume

Smells citrusy and has a thicker texture but it holds like nobody’s business plus it softens as it dries and you wouldn’t even know its there.

Balayage highlights are hitting the streets of York, Pa with our summer collection 2016

I have been inspired by our stylists creativity. Being in the hair industry as long as I have you see haircolor ideas and collections come and go. But the quality of long hair complimented with Balayage highlights as left me in awe.

One of our stylists, Taylor, has worked as an assistant moved up to stylist level and has been slammed with her specialty of balayage highlighting clients from medium length to longer lengths down to the tushy. She seems to have the gift of illuminating the clients color with contrasting shades of dark and light.

What’s interesing are the tones she has been creating with the help of Wella. Wella International haircolor company has developed brands of haircolor that is actually good for the hair. It heals the hair from the inside out instead of the outside in. I know that sounds confusing but the quality of haircolor has changed since I started in the business in 1984.

She has been mixing colors of violet that turn to a beautiful cooler champaign blonde with the dull ashy look. Cooler blondes mixed with warmer blondes with shots of a russet dark blonde. Try summer champaigne muted violet tones that are such a clear blonde with a hint of violet that is so soft and touchable. Caramel bronde is lovely shade going for medium to darker hair that can handle a mixture between brown and blonde. I mean the photos of before and after are stunning. If you get a chance go to our facebook page here to see some of her work.

                           Are balayage highlights for you?

Our professional hairstylists can use balayage to soft a color, shade in a sun kissed look on a bang or do some surface color to look like the sun kissed it. Natural looking without foil lines. It’s not quick. Chasta, a senior stylist for us at Indulge Salon south george st, enjoys colors such as desert rose. Now the girls give me a hard time about that color which I happen to love, thinks I need a pole to go with the name. Funny girls. Really desert rose has been the prettiest shade I’ve had on my balayage ends and of course I have to cover the natural gray hair that sprouts out every month.

Our stylists are passionate about our prestigious haircolor and the work they do. We work purposefully and we are totally opinionated about the art of haircolor. We actually can look at a person’s face to see where they need lighter areas to bring them wider and we can choose darker shades that can minimize a fuller face or rather a big boned face that needs to appear narrower. Similar to interior design we just do it with faces.

Hair Dye removal – what do you do?

We have been experiencing many box hair color dye removal requests coming in for emergency help!

hair dye removal

BEFORE brassy hair dye from box color

Call us immediately, we can help you find a solution to your box color  hair dye problems. The most popular has been clients that try to do their own blonde hair color dyes resulting in brassy orange or bright banana yellow. Balayage highlights from a box resulting in a digital type looking spotty look and going from blonde hair to brown reds that turn mostly reddishish if that is even a word. Some of our new clients have come in explaining they tried to remove the box color dye without success. It just got worse for them.

Hair color correction is not an easy fix always. May take 20 minutes, may take hours to have multiple applications of remover applied to sections of the hair that may not want to leave the hair. If that is the case, professionally speaking we have to make alternative decisions to give you close to what you want. Tracy Cunningham, Kardashians celebrity hairstylist said it takes an average of 3 months of many highlighting processes to get their dark hair to the prettiest blondes that compliment their skin tone. Pinterest is an awesome source for visuals and we love them but you need to understand that we must consider what you have on your head and try to get you closest to what you like from your pictures. Be realistic and optimistic.

First of all let us address the emotional turmoil that happens when you rinse out your hair and see brassy color that makes your stomach flip. Of course, it’s the morning you decided to have a hair color moment right before you have to go to work. You KNOW you can’t go to work like that but you have to do something. A quick fix….going back to the drug store or local food store scanning the box color aisle trying figure out how to go darker quickly before you punch the clock. You pick the most attractive brunette or look at the color remover depending on how much time you have. To top it off the question always comes up to the cashier, “have you used color remover before?”

After 5 hours hair color removal achieved desired hair color

And here we are another day, happily fixing the box color blunders to save another head of hair without tears. Read about Shannon story.
