I was losing my hair every day beyond the normal 80 –  100 hairs per day.

The hair had built up in my brush, clogging up the drain in the shower plus it wasn’t as shiny as it used to be.

There are many reasons why women and men lose their hair. Here are some of the following:

• medications are the biggest culprit to hair loss, thinning and/or shedding
• stress related emotional situations such as divorce, moving, major weight loss, stress in general
• hormones
• thyroid problems
• surgery before and after
• mechanical damage such as raking the brush through your hair therefore ripping it
• heat damage from flat irons
• clip in hair extension breakage from taking in and taking out frequently
• pony tails that are put in the same place every day causing stress on those hairs causing them to break
• to much protein in the hair causing it to snap
• after baby hair loss
• cancer related – the hair may be to weak to grow
• glasses that you keep sliding up and down can pull your hair out in front of your ears, top of ears and the front hairline

These are just some of the main reasons why hair doesn’t grow. The main reason for me is menopause and the fact that my son at 23 years old had passed away April 6, 2017. He was shaken at 11 weeks of age but survived for so long that this past year his brain wasn’t telling his body to breathe, to function the way it is suppose to. Watching my son’s life pass away in front of me was agonizing and heart wrenching to say the least. As a mother of a special needs child takes a toll because you want nothing for the best for your child and would do anything humanly possible for them. This is not disrespecting others situations that are causing the stress, I’m only relating my situation that has caused hair loss.

Hair loss of this type of emotional stress can last up to 3 years. Controlling it with topical solutions that are safe for your hair and body. In conjunction with the right types of foods that are rich in green coloring such as kale, collards, and green beans help grow your hair.

I wrote a previous blog post on hair loss, thinning and shedding because I want to help people grow their hair again. I’ve been experiencing this for myself to the point that I’m very aware of wearing my hair down to cover some areas in the front hairline that are thinned out so much.

3 ways to grow your hair:

1. the first thing I want you to consider if you already have long hair, is to rotate your pony tail. The hair won’t grow if it keeps snapping off at the root from you pulling to tight for a workout.
2. You can braid your hair instead of pulling it tight back to one spot. This same spot can cause tension on the hair creating stress on the same hairs then they snap off leaving fly aways.
3. take Biotin which is a supplement. Biotin doesn’t stay in the body. It works by flowing through your system but it doesn’t stay or build up. One pill is good. We have found that doses during the day up to 3 has given better results. Check with your Dr. first. Preferably in the morning, the afternoon then before you go to bed. The results will show new hair growth over a period of a month – 3 months.
4. Using a hair growing system such as Zenagen Evolve and Revolve shampoo and conditioners. Using the shampoo 3x per week will help you see results immediately by the thickness and the healthier feel of your hair. Just alternate your Zenagen shampoo with another shampoo during the week. Zenagen conditioner can be used every day because it is light. As your hair starts to grow, your scalp  will feel itchy. Between the second week and sixth week the hair will start to grow. I noticed this the other day assuming the worst then I remembered hey! my hair is growing. I checked the mirror and it does feel thicker and you can see the sprouts or “nubs” starting to emerge. I was so excited.

My point is that everyday is someone’s birthday. We never made a birthday in our house a big deal when I was little yet I secretly wanted a birthday party. Last year, my staff surprised me with a birthday party at the salon with friends, clients, staff and family. I was shocked and they were too because they sneakily had this planned with my nurses at the house , the rest of the team, my family whom had either driven in or flown in to be part of the surprise. Let’s just say when I arrived that I was in the middle of my intense work day from home and I wasn’t looking cute like I do for work at the salon. My hair wasn’t done, my makeup wasn’t done, I was still in my pj’s with zero undergarments. I mean I was up early trying to get my day underway. One of my team members, Chasta Strouse came over to pick up some things and asked if I was getting a shower? Odd that she would ask me about that but I blew if off and then I received an emergency call to come to the salon which of course I did. It was great! I did keep my coat on because  you know why!

The point is a birthday party makes you feel the love from family and friends. I never expected anything. They had beverages, cake with lots of icing, presents, and just lots of hugs. It was a great birthday.

I’ve been perplexed by the conversations around mixed hair, african american hair, spanish hair and caucasion hair. To me and my fellow stylists, it’s all textured hair. With the mixtures of texture from different ethnic backgrounds these amazing new textures have evolved.

I love the diversity of the smooth with some curl to it. Others may have more tighter curl influence that needs babying. Frizzy rebellious hair is not fun for any texture and needs to be managed appropriately. We see straight hair on the top of the head while a frizzy tight curl at the nape of the hair. I’m sure this is frustrating. It can be equally frustrating having baby fine hair that lays tight to the head. All of us have hair challenges. We all want something different. I’d love to have more hair personally that doesn’t break off as soon as it grows out an inch but that’s a separate topic for another blog.

Others could have wavier hair with normal texture but the point is how is this type of hair handled when you need a haircut or haircolor? I’ve had clients that finally made the decision to come into the salon after a year of being afraid of having a stylist cut their hair. they are afraid to have it cut to short because even if you take 1/2″ off it looks like 4″ taken off. For clients that invest in a color service, keeping color fresh and vibrant is a top priority. Textured hair treated with perms, relaxers, bleaching products are more prone to damage because of the frequency of the chemical maintenance with this type of hair. The tighter the curl it seems that color moisturizes the hair giving it more flexibility.  We suggest more frequent color maintenance with ammonia free to prevent the color from fading and IMPROVE the health and texture of the hair. Every 3 – 6 weeks schedule is best vs a 4 week schedule. This keeps the hair moisturized and mixed with a healthy dose of protein will allow the hair to heal from the inside out. The color products we carry have amazing new technology with molecules that work from the inside of the cortex.  (inner part of the hair) The outside of the hair that has been shredded exposes the inside of the hair which turns the hair to a gelly like substance causes the hair to be tangled and stretchy. Not a good scene. On a positive note the ions of the hair will turn into a more positive molecular situation allowing the cuticles (think of the outside of the tree bark that feels rough but a smooth youngling tree has a smooth surface similar to hair) to become smoother and tighter giving the appearance of a shiny surface which is healthier.

Treating mixed textures is exciting with daily opportunity for the hair to become healthy over time using the right products and the right color. What do I mean by right color? Hair color has is created with a base in the tube before its mixed with ammonia such as coconut cream, wheat protein, avocada and soy proteins. When you are using the right weight of product on the hair it can appear lighter not so physicallyweighted down.

Historically, textured hair has been treated with oils such as Argan, Moroccan, Coconut oil and other refined oils like Kendi oil that are designed to moisturize. Yet, the concepts are exceptional but are not applied or used correctly. I see the hair is matted down to much with oils which is not attractive and can smell. Not the good smell. We can show you how to use the oils properly without the weight and without the look of being greasy.

Time and time again, I hear from clients that come to Indulge Salon, York, Pa that “my stylist” didn’t listen to what I wanted and they gave me what they wanted. Look I know we as professionals aren’t perfect but since this is our career, it might be a great idea to really listen to what our clients want from their hair.

As a client, one thing that can create havoc in a consultation can be the variables that occur at a consultation. Here a few:

1. the client used Feria (yikes, loaded with metallic dyes) box color that can cause havoc for professionals to remove. Learn more about color correction here.
2. letting hair grow out a few inches along with patchy ends that are uneven expected a fix for $20
3. not allowing enough time in their personal schedule to have it fixed
4. bringing enough money for maybe a few highlights vs a hair color correction
5. choices between double processing (lifting with bleach and then toning), highlight blonding (1 step blonding), and removing aritifical hair color then having to safely deposit color on top of it.

This is some of the challenges we face every day on trying to give you our clients the best and most safe options available on the market. Facts still remain, as a professional, we have gone to a professional school, attended advanced education or specialized education for years in order to give you what you want. Other things to consider when you come in for a consultation is to wear the colors that you normally wear to work. This is super important because we take a look at your skin tone, your lifestyle and your face shape. If you wear makeup light or heavy, then wear your makeup how you normally wear it on any given day. Bring photos from pinterest, or magazines or favorite pics you may love when you look at yourself. These factors are so important.

Lastly, think about your beauty budget. How much can you spend to fix your hair today? How much have you allocated for four weeks from now? If you cannot afford the original estimate, then you will be given options to work with your beauty budget to gradually goal set to hit your end result in a few works or months. When color correcting, we will give you a time parameter based on the facts that we have to work with. Could take 20 minutes to hours depending on what we are working with on your hair.

1. Women can have breakage or hair loss caused by over doing the chemical treatments such as over highlighting on the same strands. Those women that do it themselves, you know who you are, over lap the color over previous color treated hair. This will cause the hair to weaken and break off eventually in parts of the hair. We recommend deep conditioning your hair with a protein mask for strength or deep moisturizing treatment to keep the hair moisturized and flexible. Pureology Strength Cure deep conditioning is perfect for you.

2. Abuse from the flat irons, curling irons, tongs that are to hot for fine and overly c olored hair could potentially cause breakage. At Indulge Salon, we provide thorough consultations to remedy the over doing it and teach our clients how to properlt use a spray such as Wella Sebastian Trilliant that is sprayed on prior to flat ironing the hair to protect the actual hair fiber. This helps prevent anymore breakage.

3. Health conditions such as Anemoia or Thyroid problems can wreak havoc on the inside of the body and as a result the hair will start to thin. You will notice strands in the strainer at the bottom of the tub or shower. Stress and hormonal shifts like after the baby is born is a normal to lose 80 to 100 hairs a day. Your body is trying to get back to normal with the shedding.  Make an appointment with your General Practitioner to have your blood levels checked.

4. Combing hair when wet. the hair fiber stretches and when its weak it will snap.  Try not to comb from the scalp down. We recommend combing from the ends towards the scalp to detangle the hair. Before combing use a detangler such as 21 benefits spray by Pureology. This has 21 actual ingredients that detangle, provide nutrients and help protect the hair color from fading.

Since your hair is thinning or breaking off or your body has turned against you with crazy hormone imbalances, we recommend to start to fatten your hair. Suggestions on foods: eat more green vegetables, spinach, tomatoes, kale, eggs for protein or protein shakes.

Keep your hair super clean. Do a double shampoo with a cleansing shampoo. The first shampoo cleanses the scalp and moves the dirt from the scalp. The 2nd shampoo is what really cleanses the scalp and hair moving the dirt away by rinsing it. “like your facial skin, scalp tissue holds a lot of bacteria, and when combined with oil, it xan weigh down the hair and impede healthy growth from your follicles over time,” says Elizabeth Cunnane Phillips, a trichologist at the Philip Kinglsley Clinic in New York City. Only apply conditioner from mid – shaft to ends to comb and detangle.

Is your hair thinning?

The newest powders that absorb oils allowing you to go 3 days without shampooing can clog pores. Any thickening sprays are awesome but they are like puffer jackets giving the illusion of bulk. those of us with fine hair really appreciate the bulk. I personally have to gather all of my hair into a pony tail to make it look like I might have thicker hair. All of those types of products contain polyers (waxes) that coat the hair.

We highly recommend a single process color to start for fine hair to thicken from the inside out. I actually do this to my hair to thicken it and then I highlight my hair in the areas that I need it to enhance my facial features. When this is done professionally, the results are outstanding visually and you will have more confidence pulling yourself together. We also will recommend the right products for your hair type and we access the goals to move towards super healthy hair. Contrary to popular belief, to much protein can break the hair. When the hair feels stiff and dry, this would be a good guide to drop back from using the protein enriched shampoo but to switch quickly to moisturizing shampoo and conditioner for temporary relief. The new blushing reds by Wella Illumina have arrived. These stunning beauties start off with natural looking blah color and are turned into stunning models. This model has three different colors that are infused with golden blonde, a mixture of a copper with lighter blonde creating a more “apricot” color affect. The new color processes only take about 1 1/2 hours to actually figure out which colors are best for your skin tone and then we decide how much natural highlighting we will do for you and then we tone the colors with a special pastel tone that is more translucent in color that make the hair feel and look like silk.

Wella does have a patent on the ingredients of the color. Otherwise, I would have already found out because I love knowing what goes into the haircolor that I’m using on my clients.

For this season’s new look the inspiration pushes the boundaries of neutralizing the yello out of hair with pale metalics with a winter white and steely blue grey shades. Perfect case in point, my client Amy Harlacker wasn’t able to obtain the white look that she has been wanting for years in another salon. As we kept pre-lightening her hair to create the beautiful clear pale blonde color she was yearning for more…

I love her more! She let me have creative freedom. As a stylist thats like saying “do whatever you want” free reign to do multiple tones, multiple dimensional white, grey with  a pinch of violet to cool out the tones in the hair and sometimes we chalked her hair with vibrant purple to edge it up a notch.

As you will be able to see, Amy’s hair color is more steely than white for this 1st quarter of the winte season. We have done darker grey blue at the perimeter with white at the top or foiled pearls through the white in a patterned approach.
