When Maggie and I first entertained the idea of her taking her brown hair to gray, we had some considerations to think of such as:

1. the pros and cons of gray hair
2. what if her hair wouldn’t lift as light as we needed it to? Back up color was necessary.
3. maintenance of gray hair as it naturally grows in
4. the initial cost to remove the brown highlighted colors

Is platinum right for you?

Maggie wanted to achieve a pretty platinum color that was nice and icy looking to match with her skin tone. Know that when you are working with so many different tones of brown that has highlights and low lights in it, the “what lies beneath” emerges. This becomes a discovery process. I had to use many types of bleaching with an additive that re-bonds the insides of the hair to protect it from breaking.

Lightening hair is time consuming. It is a slow going process that has to be watched. Some areas of the hair or head that might be light enough have to be rinsed or removed early, other areas may be darker and need to be left on longer.  In some cases a strand of hair could be 3 colors from brown to gray on a single strand!! . This where having a professional that has been trained on advanced bleaching is going to give you the best results.

FYI as you decide on the right color goals to go with your skin tone and a back up plan if the hair won’t lighten as much as you would like it to, then the back up plan would be to come in a few weeks to have more lightener applied to keep the integrity of the hair. This is normal procedure when you are trying to lighten as much as you are in one appointment. We recommend 2 – 3 appointments to achieve the level of lightness. We did have to change out Maggie’s makeup with a beige to enhance her skin tone. She looked even younger after the makeup changes to beige foundation, pink lip colors and we even tried colors that we discovered didn’t work for her.

Patience is a key factor in the waiting game to process. Bring a phone, a book, something to do because hair color removal/bleaching when going from brown to gray can take hours. Hours meaning 7 hours sometimes more. Slow as you go is the way to think about hair color removal.

After the initial removal, we were looking for the hair staying healthy while processing especially the ends of the hair. One of the considerations in hair color removal is the ends because of them being lighter, the opportunity for breakage would be higher than normal if we hadn’t taken any precautions. We did use a re-bonding product to help keep the integrity of the hair. Once we were able to rinse the hair out and found we were happy with the raw underlying  color, then we were able to pursue the right tone.

Choose the tone of gray wisely

When choosing a tone of gray when going from brown to gray, this is a visual adjustment for the person wearing these new colors. You might look at Pinterest or Instagram and think you will like the color but if the color you want is not held up against your skin tone, you might have the adverse affect with your skin tone and have to rethink or redo the color to make it work for you. This is a time consuming process but an important process all the same.

Try a wig on to get an idea if you like yourself in gray

I recommend trying on wigs BEFORE you make a big comittment to changing your hair color from brown to gray or red to gray to make sure you will be happy with the transition. Going from blonde to gray is easier because of the lighter shades.

Transitioning from brown to gray can be an adjustment visually  with your eyes, skin tone, and getting used to looking at yourself in the mirror can take about two weeks.  The maintenance on gray hair will still be a comittment by using Fabuloso color conditioner that keeps the direct dye pigments in the lightened hair. Keeping the hair toned every two to 4 weeks in the beginning will help your gray hair have longevity  is  essential to maintaining the gray tones because the underlying yellow in naturally dark hair can start to surface within a week or longer depending on how often you wash your hair, which shampoo and conditioning products are used all have affects on the hair. Those Fabuloso color tones can help keep the yellow at bay.

Do your research by having a color consultation done with Indulge Salon York Pa. You could even go to a paint store pick out some gray paint swatches that you like, hold them to your skin or take them home in the lighting that you are in the most to see if you like yourself in those colors. Color tones do matter. Some gray hair color tones have blue, beige, yellow or violet which all those tones can make a difference in your skin tone.

Look who got a hair makeover here in Greensboro, Ga at Lake Oconee! 

Here at Indulge Salon, we often have clients come in asking for a specific look but not always entirely aware of the work that went into creating a specific colour or look. We call this COUTURE COLOUR. A colour that is highly customized and created using a variety of techniques to give you the client a look that is photograph ready. A lot of todays looks are very natural and simple. But creating a colour that blends seamlessly isn’t always as simple as it may seem.

Todays client hair makeover comes from master stylist, David at Indulge Greensboro, Ga. His client Cara is a young mom and an elementary school teacher. She has a young face and braces so its very important to her as a young professional to keep a look that is easy yet sophisticated!

She had been seeing a stylist regularly at her previous hometown and driving a distance to see her for her colour needs. However she has been looking for a salon closer to her new home.

After her last visit, her previous stylist had made her hair too solid and too dark and she was having trouble with the layers since growing her hair out from a bob hairstyle. Her stylist could not fit Cara in for a few days for a correction, so she sought out her new GO TO colour destination in the Lake Oconee area!

After a thorough consultation David discussed with Cara her likes and dislikes with the current condition of her cut and colour situation. She had pulled out some inspiration pictures of beautiful brunettes with a very “lived in” highlight. For fall we are calling this look THE BRONDE! Some of her inspirations reminded us of Jessica Biel! And she was excited because she said her husband’s celebrity crush is Jessica Biel.

David explained to her that because she was trying to achieve a very specific look from scratch that it would be a multiple step process to achieve the desired effect. First David chose his Magma Freelights Lightener and decided to hand paint a highlight on top of the existing color. We carry only professional use color such as Magma brand because it is a tonal lightener (lifts color out and then tones it at the same time)  it gave him control of the

underlying colours that were exposed as these highlights were lifted! Usually, when lifting hair colour, the hair can turn brassy or get to light.  He chose to use two different tones for dimension, a warm gold brown and a softer blonde shade. After the lightener was done processing the hair had a wonderful dimenisional blended brunette while keeping some depth to the base.

Because Cara’s hair was so dark to begin with and had no dimension we decided that the hair needed a few more pops of lightness in specific places. Often to achieve these soft dimensional brunettes we have to use an effect called highlight layering to achieve many different layers of dimension. The process may take more time but the results are breath taking and magazine ready! David chose to use foils to really target specific pieces of hair and allow the product to create much more brightness in the hair. No need to overdo it! He used a minimal amount of foils realizing sometimes less is more when it comes to achieve this modern look! Take a look at the process below!

David then used his knowledge in French hair cutting methods to correct some bulky areas within Cara’s haircut that were making it difficult to style! Afterword her hair was finished off with a volume mousse from Wella and set with a large barrel curling iron for a romantic loose curl! The hair makeover was a total transformation!

Cara loved it and said that she found her new colour specialist in her new hometown! She left taking advantage of our HALF OFF WELLA PRODUCT SPECIAL! We are clearing out our old favorite to make way for Wella’s new EIMI line coming in October!

The past few years all we have been doing is smoothing, oiling and flattening our hair to be current. Now we are embracing our textured hair. Curly hair is becoming more natural and poofed out to demonstrate our authenticity. We still are not digging the frizz but controlling it by ponytailing with a teezed puff. We are adding hair extensions for instant length to the pony tail.

Here is a really awesome model below that gave me inspiration of textured layers with bold makeup by Tigi.

Hairstyle is of medium length with major layers tousled but sexy. As you can see with the Tigi model the makeup is heavier around the eye. Still a bed head type of style but who cares because most women are now used to not shampooing their hair daily and overcoming the oilies with dust to soak up the oil or a dry shampoo spray to absorb and give one more day to the dirty girl look. (just make sure it’s not smelly on a date night) Our version of this newer fall look is a heavier highlight that can be balayaged or foiled (yes, we still have put foils in the hair for those stubborn dark hairs to reach a lighter shade) then we can tone it to the perfect color or with 2 colors that make your skin glow. We have two new shades that are a dusty rose and golden rose. Each of those serve a purpose with cool and warm tones given a sun kissed look. Ask your stylist about the sponge colors.

This is one of the newest looks provided by Loreal. We express ourselves at work with our hairstyle, makeup, and work attire. What message are you sending at work when you show up? Do you have skin showing inappropriately? Do coworkers make comments that you are ready for the bars after work? Well, I don’t really know if that is a compliment or maybe they might be trying to tell you something at work. I know that we certainly are tired of seeing all of that skin showing from clothes not fitting properly, no makeup, and hair that is not kept up as we would expect at a professional position. Over the years, I have seen the way women carry themselves this past year have gone south. Not in a good way. It appears that women seem tired, worn out from carrying the load of being a mom, provider, and coach to their children let alone trying to climb the business ladder to improve their performance at work. Whew, those are many roles to play with limited time for oneself. I often hear, your luck I made it here on time. This is a shame because we have beautiful women in York, PA that have let themselves go for the sake of others. I speak from experience with my own children growing up and I still have one at home. Either way, we have got to feel good about ourselves so that we can continue to give to others. Wearing makeup this year is very classic and is simple to do in the morning. Low maintenance yet striking for the day. We are trying to help our women in York, PA to look better so that they are paid better. There has been a study done that you can read about stating that women make more money when they appear more professional at work. I believe this and can see the results over the years. I also have noticed women that take better care of themselves along with their dress code have been treated better by coworkers and strangers that don’t even know them. Better customer service is given to the women that treat themselves better. Hairstyles are focused more on a bob such as the one you can see above with highlights, movement and texture. The longer the hair is showing with waves that lay over the shoulder. The image of the new professional is demonstrating tweed skirts, simple classic tops with heels again. The heels and boots are not to tall and yes you can still walk in them. Treatments have become available to help offset those stress wrinkles around the eyes and mouth. The harder you work, the later you stay up at night will temporarily age your skin. Think about going to be earlier and rewarding yourself with a facial peel or you could call them chemical peels that peel away the dead skin that has built up during the months of stress. If you feel totally out of control, perhaps you could try some meditation for peace and calm. Good luck with the new work look this season. Try some auburn burnished brown with a clear gloss over top to give you the shine and manageability you might be looking for which will eliminate the dry hair. Whoa! You may want to experience the most beautiful highlights in the world.

These balayage highlights started in France and have edged their way to Hollywood with Cameron Diaz, Nicole Ritchie and others that have graced the magazines.

You can be a celebrity too with these types of highlights. Sensational natural looking color that looks like you were in the sun all day and for that matter all summer. The hair will maintain the shine with the right products to maintain at home. Ask your stylist which products will keep the freshness of the blondes. You don’t really have to have the bright blonde that usually comes along in the summer. Try the Brazilian colors that have a brunette base with caramel or golden butterscotch running through it. We are doing a combination of the Ombre color with the balayage that give a more unique look.

I just finished a spectacular blonde color last night in the salon. Let me describe it to you. The client had a darker base with strawberry blonde highlights. We took the base of her color to a nice light golden blonde and then I did thicker balayage that is down around the mid lengths and ends, then I did slight individual (this takes a while and must be really detailed to get it right) through the curve of her head and the bangs were smoking beautiful!!

I hope she posted her photo on face book for us because she looked amazing. I think her husband will be really happy to see her. This is a great technique if you don’t like lines at the top of head that always look like you need to redo them. Call the salon if you want to try this technique. It will take about 1-1 1/2 hours if you are darker. This takes time and as I said before lots of detail to carve it into the style of the hair.

Kimberly’s naturally curl hair

I’m on a roll tonight. It’s 12:00 a.m. and my son is asleep. Everything is quiet and I was thinking about the hair fiascos that happen on a plane when one travels. I always look at hair when I travel and think about how I could transform someone with a new hair color or a haircut that would better suit their features. In York, PA at Indulge salon we have come across some pretty interesting mullets, short bangs with all one length (it’s not the cute kind) and other assemblies of hair creations. So my fave is the person that leans back has a little perspiration working in the back of their neck and of course somebody’s got the air blowing from the top of the aircraft onto your face which means that now you are going to freeze and so is your hair! hee hee. I just had to chuckle because you know whats coming! Yep, when they wake up from their groggy sleep, the haircut no longer looks like a work of art. it looks like a squirrel got roused up and was running around in circles at the back of the head in the nape area. Some hair laid tight to the head, some sticking straight up looking distorted. I can hardly keep it together here describing this. I have met some pretty dynamic people on my flights but I can assure you each trip is interesting. I always get the guy that has nervous gas. I want to throw up every flight. Although the last flight I was on was more pleasant than most. Professional, clean, and pleasant to sit next to. So the next time you are traveling give yourself a little fluff with the hand in the back of your head to unruffle the hair. Butternut blonde with multi-dimensional tones throughout the hair tones

Look I can really appreciate trying to save a buck or two. Lately, we have had this huge influx of banana, orange, stripey hair that has graced our doors to be fixed into this lovely multi-dimensional hair color goddess. Truly, it is a gift that so many people trust us from  their box color dilema to beautiful tresses flowing down their backs. It is not easy trying to dissect the type of box color used to how much to where they put it on and then their arm got tired of holding up the bottle and the applicator splattered everywhere leaving a trail for us to fix. Ugh! Hard for them and hard for us but we love fixing bad color jobs. This is a transformational opportunity for us to take somone that tried to be a blonde and they did their best “god bless their soul”. That saying is from our Salon Manager, Shane Parrish, in Greensboro Ga. He always says that when he knows that our lovely clients really need help. Here in the north we just chuckle and say that’s Shane for you. Then we get to work figuring out how to help our new blonde friend. Doing your own hair can be costly emotionally and financially. It is worth spending the money up front to get a great result rather than trying to do your own thing because in the end you will end up spending more money to get it fixed and then swear you will never do that again. I promise. It happens all of the time. So if you are thinking about it, just put the box down. I know the girl looks cute and her hair looks adorable and sexy and all that on the box but that doesn’t mean that when you put that color from the bottle that you are going to look like the girl on the box. The research and developers have stylists that work in a back room experimenting on different shades and different multiple processes with the box color. Most of these box colors are made with fabric dye. Yep! are you gasping yet? Also, made with metallic dyes which means its hard to get out. I can tell from my own experience that when I was a working girl in one of the those hamburger joints with the big W, I tried different hair colors such as black which I thought would wash out. Who knew that I would have cat black hair for 6 – 8 weeks and it didn’t wash out. I had regrowth of inches before it was slightly fading. Horrible. I felt like a tramp and not cute at all. I tried to play it up with darker makeup and then my dad would say you look like a raccoon. I cried. So girls, I understand when you have box color blunders. Since I’ve attended beauty school and attended many advanced training centers all over the world, I do not recommend the emotional toll it takes on you.
