We will place our thumb over the models face and ask, “do you still like the hairstyle?” As consumers we are so enamored by the face that we secretly want to look like them. I personally want to look like Cameron Diaz and have her body. Our new client sighs and says “no, I didn’t realize.” YOU CANT BUY THIS LOOK IN A BOX. 

With that being said, we have some ground work to cover on what you really can have for your face shape and lifestyle. I had THE most wonderful day today doing some beautiful hair color on different styles of women. Some love their long hair, short hair and men and their shorter styles. I love the most particular discerning clients and they love me at our salon on South George Street, York PA.

I need to clear some things up for you when it comes to hair color conversation. Here  we go:

1. a “root touch up” is the new hair that has grown out from the scalp and needs some color applied to it.

2. a color balance, glazing, glossing is a color service that is applied from the mid lengths to ends. If we need more hair color mixed because your hair is longer or thicker, we have to charge you more for it.

3. partial highlights is the top of the head with two packets on each side of the face nearest the framing of the face to enhance your bones and overall appearance.

4. full highlights is the foil packets all over the head in a strategic pattern that will give you the result that you are looking for. After the highlights have processed, then the stylist will apply whats called a toner to tone the hair a more pastel color which makes the original color look shinier and brighter.

5. hair color glazing is a full bodied semi permanent color that will stain the hair for about 6-8 weeks and will need to be refreshed especially if the hair color is red because red fades the fastest because of the red die #7 thata is primarily used in Europe and not in the states.

The next time you are in the salon and you have a question about price or what the service will do for you, ask the stylist and they will be more than happy to get the aswer for you. In some cases with hair color that is going from blonde to dark, we will have to place a filler on the hair to help hold the darker color. If you choose not to have this applied to your color, your hair color will fade no matter how many tines you come in to the salon. Must have blonde hair filled to make the darker brown or brown reds to stay.

I’ve been noticing to many DIY’s. Shame to because the girls that I see are prettier but their hair is messed up trying to do these videos and well it makes us professionals look bad because we have spent thousdands of dollars towards our education to make educated decisions towards your hair and makeup. Its been a privilge to do your hair this season.

Resolution is a defined resolving to not do something such as not over eat chocolate. Losing weight seems to be a popular resolution for some people. However when you decide (make a choice) becomes a goal. The goal is more concrete.

When we make our concrete goals and drill them down to benchmarks such as by March I will have lost 10 lbs. That really is only 3.33 lbs per month. This type of goal makes it realistic and achievable. We also tell ourselves subconsciously that we are able to reach 3 lbs per month and add an activity to shed more calories than you eat will give you an end result. Seems easy right? It is when you put your mind to work and follow up with some visuals. If you place a picture of a body that you would like to see yourself in the mind will perform naturally. Stop punishing yourself and just live!

My goal for 2014 is to create many new hairstyles and new haircolors for my clients that will refresh their attitude to have their best year ever. When you feel good you look good. I had a long time customer in the chair and we were talking about how change is imperative and keeps you feeling fresh and alive. Simple highlights or just adding dimensions to your color puts more color in your skin and can make you look healthy. I personally thought this was interesting since I am going through this myself at age 47. I just had to reach over and do a quick calculation on my age. You think I would pay attention to this more but I really think age is not important until your hair starts to shed drastically like mine is right now. When I shower, I can see my long hair being washed down the drain along with the shampoo and conditioner. I see long hair that has been applied to the bathroom floor because when I blow dry my  hair and I am in a hurry, the hair blows everywhere and I don’t have time to clean it up asap because it’s still wet. I know it sounds gross but I do clean it up. I certainly cannot live in that enviroment either.

Back to my story. As I brush my hair with the special flatbrush that is made for longer hair, I visually see a new padding develop that is not the brush padding if you get my meaning. I am disgusted once again that this aging stuff is starting to happen. I see it with my clients in the salon. I give them great advice on their hair and forgot about my own. I learned that I have to take my own advice,too.

Typical falling out is normal when you brush or comb your hair. Naturally you will lose about 80-100 hairs per day. This is normal. Scalp hair grows in cycles, with each hair follicle undergoing 10-30 cycles in its lifetime. The cycles are comprised of three phases of growth:

• Anagen or active phase, which can last two to eight years
• Catagen, or transitional phase, which typically lasts four to six weeks
• Telegen, or resting phase, which continues two to three months

Each follicle works on its own such as an independent person, while one is growing the other may be resting. Kind of like a couple in their day to day activities. One is taking out the trash while the other is sitting on the couch watching golf……..This keeps the same amount of hairs on the head which is approximately 100,000 on a healthy scalp. Lets GET TO THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM

Alopecia is a medical term for hair loss, but there are many types under that heading. For instance, hereditary hair loss can result in a pattern of bald spots which is different from alopecia caused by medication or postpartum changes and definitely stress related. I can tell you from real experience with my customers, that stress changes the body and the cells inside to cope with the trauma going on in your life. The body will do what it has to do naturally to protect you and your insides. It works on auto pilot, however; if you are under some major stress this can overload your body’s protective powers and you might need some assistance in combating this stress until you get over it or through the events. Did you know that stress in the body can cause effects for three years. I learned this through one of my brides that I cared for years ago. She had alopecia areata which is hair that is lost in patches. We did a great job camoflaging her baldness for her wedding day, but can you imagine her trying to deal with this?

The type of hair loss a client experiences will dtermine the best treatment options. We start off with analyzing the scalp on a basic level at the salon. We check to see if there are any abrasions, we check to see if its just patchy, we ask questions such as diet related to proteins and we also check the emotional levels of our client by asking if they are going through some rough patches in their life. Hair is emotional because this is an accessory to our image and our looks are important to us and its the first thing we look at when we look at another person. Unless you are a dentist or work in the teeth field such as my sister, that is exactly what they zoom in on. Your teeth.

There is generally a trigger that sets off hair loss. If you have an event that was stressful in your life, the hair loss can start three months later. If the event has not stopped, the hair loss may result in a chronic situation such as hormonal changes like childbirth and menopause. The changes in your diet can really change your hair texture and the density of the hair. We have seen clients that went all out on a high protein diet which led to major weightloss but also resulted in LONG TERM hair loss that did not come back.

When someone is really stressed according to the Suddenly Slimmer Wellness Center and Day Spa in Phoenix, Spa director, Jeanie Marcelino says “they usually find high levels of metals such as copper and iron in the hair during higher stress levels.” I find this fascinating information due to the fact that we work with well water every day and treat the hair differently with well water products.

Now most of what I see is hormonal and when women start the pre-menopause stage it will take about 10 years to work through the system. That part of the aging process stinks and I say fight it all the way girls. Get yourself some KAVA KAVA at your local vitamin store to help yourself with those unnatural mood swings and pick up some Biotin supplement to help yourself start to relax and start growing some hair back. A friend of mine shared this with me and I thought I would try it. It has a bit of southwest flair to it and normally I don’t go to far out of my recipe box with this type of food but I did and WOW! I ate almost the whole bowl. It’s good it’s low calorie so eat up my friends.

Here it is: Corn and Avocado Salad

2 large cans of corn (Del Monte)

1 large ripe avocado

1 small red onion (I don’t use much because I don’t like bad breath however; you use as much as you want)

1 can of black beans

1 large tomato cut into small cubes

add a bunch of cilantro

add a bunch of basil (I love basil so I added a lot)

1/4 cup of virgin olive oil

2 tbsp of champaign vinegar but if you don’t have this just use your red vinegar

pinch of kosher salt

pinch of black pepper

swish it all together and you have a side dish or make it a meal and share with some friends. This tastes great on salad.
