We will suggest options such as appropriate conditioning treatments, a new haircut to trim off the burnt ends, consider shampoo for hair growth, supplements, and natural hair extensions to fill in the gaps for fuller looking hair if necessary.

Hair breakage can be devastating to the person that has experienced this situation. Emotionally this can be self deflating if you have been growing your hair out for years then all of a sudden the hair is short with uneven spots or worse dried out like a broom. Self confidence  can be diminished thinking that other’s are looking at you even when they may not be. Growing your hair out can take many months up to years to grow out along with using the right products as your hair grows out. IF you get that gut feeling that something isn’t quite right then maybe it isn’t and you ask the stylist to check your color again . If the color or bleach is on your highlighted hair to long than it most likely will break off when the cooler water hits it in the shampoo bowl. Lighteners or bleaches have ingredients in them that when mixed with a developer  can cause damage if not handled properly. Hair salons are suppose to be professional by not leaving you alone. Cosmetologists go to classes to be updated with education to prevent damage to your hair and scalp and with the newest technology these days, it’s advisable that you ask when the stylist has been to the latest educational event or ask what type of new products do they have when it comes to lightening hair.

Salon professionals have a license for a reason. We are suppose to have advanced knowledge about products before we use them on a client. I am confronted with teary streaked faces that had just come from a a salon needing an emergency session! I feel bad for the client. I feel angry with the stylist that doesn’t have the education or skill certification to be doing the services.

You ask, “what can be done about my broken off hair Kimberly?”

First of all when it comes to hair that has broken off from chemical damage, we need to make sure the scalp is not damaged beyond the epidermis. If it is blistering or puss is coming out of wounds on the scalp, you will need to see a dermatologist and potentially a plastic surgeon. Yes, sessions like this can be this serious. Blisters can be developed in less than 3 seconds with strong metals in the well water or more alkaline water in the area. For example, if you live in an area that has well water, the ph level can be equivalent to a 14 which is like bleach water that you scrub your floors  to clean them. As a stylist, we need to be informed of medications that you take because whatever goes into your  body comes out through the hair, nails and skin. All ph levels for the hair should be around 4.5 – 5.5. There is much to know when working with the hair and the results of products such as shampoo and conditioners. I could go on and on but for the sake of this article today, I will leave it to the broken off hair due to chemical damage from over highlighting, bleaching incorrectly from other salons or from people trying to bleach their own hair which is disastrous.

We can do hair extensions to fill in IF you have enough hair to cover those installed. See our page on bridal hair extensions that I could into depth about the installation, maintenance and hair coloring extensions. If you have at least an inch at the scalp perhaps single strand extensions for a natural look. Still you will need about 6″ of natural hair to lay over the extensions. My suggestions are not an easy fix however immediately getting yourself to Indulge salon to evaluate your hair is a good idea!

I know what it’s like to have lost hair from stress, thinning, shedding hair and breaking off at the back of my head from pony tails! I speak from experience. It took a year for my hair to grow back. It is still fine but fuller and thicker from using the right products.

I was losing my hair every day beyond the normal 80 –  100 hairs per day.

The hair had built up in my brush, clogging up the drain in the shower plus it wasn’t as shiny as it used to be.

There are many reasons why women and men lose their hair. Here are some of the following:

• medications are the biggest culprit to hair loss, thinning and/or shedding
• stress related emotional situations such as divorce, moving, major weight loss, stress in general
• hormones
• thyroid problems
• surgery before and after
• mechanical damage such as raking the brush through your hair therefore ripping it
• heat damage from flat irons
• clip in hair extension breakage from taking in and taking out frequently
• pony tails that are put in the same place every day causing stress on those hairs causing them to break
• to much protein in the hair causing it to snap
• after baby hair loss
• cancer related – the hair may be to weak to grow
• glasses that you keep sliding up and down can pull your hair out in front of your ears, top of ears and the front hairline

These are just some of the main reasons why hair doesn’t grow. The main reason for me is menopause and the fact that my son at 23 years old had passed away April 6, 2017. He was shaken at 11 weeks of age but survived for so long that this past year his brain wasn’t telling his body to breathe, to function the way it is suppose to. Watching my son’s life pass away in front of me was agonizing and heart wrenching to say the least. As a mother of a special needs child takes a toll because you want nothing for the best for your child and would do anything humanly possible for them. This is not disrespecting others situations that are causing the stress, I’m only relating my situation that has caused hair loss.

Hair loss of this type of emotional stress can last up to 3 years. Controlling it with topical solutions that are safe for your hair and body. In conjunction with the right types of foods that are rich in green coloring such as kale, collards, and green beans help grow your hair.

I wrote a previous blog post on hair loss, thinning and shedding because I want to help people grow their hair again. I’ve been experiencing this for myself to the point that I’m very aware of wearing my hair down to cover some areas in the front hairline that are thinned out so much.

3 ways to grow your hair:

1. the first thing I want you to consider if you already have long hair, is to rotate your pony tail. The hair won’t grow if it keeps snapping off at the root from you pulling to tight for a workout.
2. You can braid your hair instead of pulling it tight back to one spot. This same spot can cause tension on the hair creating stress on the same hairs then they snap off leaving fly aways.
3. take Biotin which is a supplement. Biotin doesn’t stay in the body. It works by flowing through your system but it doesn’t stay or build up. One pill is good. We have found that doses during the day up to 3 has given better results. Check with your Dr. first. Preferably in the morning, the afternoon then before you go to bed. The results will show new hair growth over a period of a month – 3 months.
4. Using a hair growing system such as Zenagen Evolve and Revolve shampoo and conditioners. Using the shampoo 3x per week will help you see results immediately by the thickness and the healthier feel of your hair. Just alternate your Zenagen shampoo with another shampoo during the week. Zenagen conditioner can be used every day because it is light. As your hair starts to grow, your scalp  will feel itchy. Between the second week and sixth week the hair will start to grow. I noticed this the other day assuming the worst then I remembered hey! my hair is growing. I checked the mirror and it does feel thicker and you can see the sprouts or “nubs” starting to emerge. Shedding and thinning hair every day in your brush or bottom of the shower?

It’s not bad enough that you see hair in your brush but then you see your hair looking thinner around your hairline, shedding, starting bald patches on top of your head. the hair catches at the bottom of the shower seemingly like a small animal got loose in your shower room. Your self esteem has plummeted plus if you are under a lot of stressful situations, it won’t be getting better any time soon.  You feel like everyone is staring at your bald spot so you flip the top of your hair over it to hide it.

Hi I’m the owner of a hair salon, Indulge Salon, York, Pa. I have been experiencing what we are talking about today which is thinning, shedding hair or just hair loss for women. I have a small bald patch in the center of my forward in the hairline. Baby fine hairs that have gone astray. Left the herd of hairs so to speak.  It happens to men too. Male pattern baldness is prevalent in 95% both men and women. Staggering statistics I’d say.

Hair loss such as alopecia can be a bald spot located anywhere on the head. This actually happened to my daughter after surgery. She was so stressed out from having her body go through surgery that she had a bald spot the size of a quarter on top of her head and in the nape area. Just normal high stressful situations such as my son passing away from Shaken Baby in April 6, 2017 has caused my hair to literally break off, shed and thin because my body has been absorbing the nutrients from my hair.

As you can see in the picture the hair is broken off from pony tailing when wet. I stretched the hair from my head so that you could see how much breakage I really had since April, 2017. As I started to experience seeing more hair in my brush, my levels of anxiousness started to get higher because my hair was getting thinner and thinner by the month. I wasn’t sleeping, eating much and overworked to take away my depression of losing my son.

I didn’t realize it at first but looking at the hair on the floor of my bathroom when I washed the floor, I could see how much I was losing. The biggest comment was when my guy said, “Kimberly, I think we have a dead animal in the bathroom.” He was holding a wad of my hair in his hand. EEK! I was mortified at how much was in his hand holding my hair. Well, I forgot to clean out the drain too.

Loss of hair can continue for up to 3 years  after a stressful situation. The root of the stress can be stored in our bodies. You have to find a way to get happy or basically let go of the stress if you can start decreasing any way you can.

New mothers can lose hair because of the hormonal changes a new mother adjusts to. In turn the shedding of hair could be causing more stress while they are recuperating from having baby. New mothers are sleep deprived, not eating right although they are trying and then throw in some dieting to reduce their baby weight which as resulted in the hair thinning and shedding.

It’s prevalent with our new mothers due to the body transitioning from the baby taking the nutrients it needs to normalized hormones.  Stress, lack of sleep over time can cause hair loss. Shedding of hair can go from a few months after birth to up to 3 years. The hair grows 1/2′ per month for the normal person. Its now possible to grow your hair fuller and thicker.

I’ve been perplexed by the conversations around mixed hair, african american hair, spanish hair and caucasion hair. To me and my fellow stylists, it’s all textured hair. With the mixtures of texture from different ethnic backgrounds these amazing new textures have evolved.

I love the diversity of the smooth with some curl to it. Others may have more tighter curl influence that needs babying. Frizzy rebellious hair is not fun for any texture and needs to be managed appropriately. We see straight hair on the top of the head while a frizzy tight curl at the nape of the hair. I’m sure this is frustrating. It can be equally frustrating having baby fine hair that lays tight to the head. All of us have hair challenges. We all want something different. I’d love to have more hair personally that doesn’t break off as soon as it grows out an inch but that’s a separate topic for another blog.

Others could have wavier hair with normal texture but the point is how is this type of hair handled when you need a haircut or haircolor? I’ve had clients that finally made the decision to come into the salon after a year of being afraid of having a stylist cut their hair. they are afraid to have it cut to short because even if you take 1/2″ off it looks like 4″ taken off. For clients that invest in a color service, keeping color fresh and vibrant is a top priority. Textured hair treated with perms, relaxers, bleaching products are more prone to damage because of the frequency of the chemical maintenance with this type of hair. The tighter the curl it seems that color moisturizes the hair giving it more flexibility.  We suggest more frequent color maintenance with ammonia free to prevent the color from fading and IMPROVE the health and texture of the hair. Every 3 – 6 weeks schedule is best vs a 4 week schedule. This keeps the hair moisturized and mixed with a healthy dose of protein will allow the hair to heal from the inside out. The color products we carry have amazing new technology with molecules that work from the inside of the cortex.  (inner part of the hair) The outside of the hair that has been shredded exposes the inside of the hair which turns the hair to a gelly like substance causes the hair to be tangled and stretchy. Not a good scene. On a positive note the ions of the hair will turn into a more positive molecular situation allowing the cuticles (think of the outside of the tree bark that feels rough but a smooth youngling tree has a smooth surface similar to hair) to become smoother and tighter giving the appearance of a shiny surface which is healthier.

Treating mixed textures is exciting with daily opportunity for the hair to become healthy over time using the right products and the right color. What do I mean by right color? Hair color has is created with a base in the tube before its mixed with ammonia such as coconut cream, wheat protein, avocada and soy proteins. When you are using the right weight of product on the hair it can appear lighter not so physicallyweighted down.

Time and time again, I hear from clients that come to Indulge Salon, York, Pa that “my stylist” didn’t listen to what I wanted and they gave me what they wanted. Look I know we as professionals aren’t perfect but since this is our career, it might be a great idea to really listen to what our clients want from their hair.

As a client, one thing that can create havoc in a consultation can be the variables that occur at a consultation. Here a few:

1. the client used Feria (yikes, loaded with metallic dyes) box color that can cause havoc for professionals to remove. Learn more about color correction here.
2. letting hair grow out a few inches along with patchy ends that are uneven expected a fix for $20
3. not allowing enough time in their personal schedule to have it fixed
4. bringing enough money for maybe a few highlights vs a hair color correction
5. choices between double processing (lifting with bleach and then toning), highlight blonding (1 step blonding), and removing aritifical hair color then having to safely deposit color on top of it.

This is some of the challenges we face every day on trying to give you our clients the best and most safe options available on the market. Facts still remain, as a professional, we have gone to a professional school, attended advanced education or specialized education for years in order to give you what you want. Other things to consider when you come in for a consultation is to wear the colors that you normally wear to work. This is super important because we take a look at your skin tone, your lifestyle and your face shape. If you wear makeup light or heavy, then wear your makeup how you normally wear it on any given day. Bring photos from pinterest, or magazines or favorite pics you may love when you look at yourself. These factors are so important.

Lastly, think about your beauty budget. How much can you spend to fix your hair today? How much have you allocated for four weeks from now? If you cannot afford the original estimate, then you will be given options to work with your beauty budget to gradually goal set to hit your end result in a few works or months. When color correcting, we will give you a time parameter based on the facts that we have to work with. Could take 20 minutes to hours depending on what we are working with on your hair.

Indulge Salon, South York was a full house with our team, clients and our educator from Wella Professional came in to give us specialized education on balayage techniques for natural curly hair, conditioning treatments for dry itchy scalp for clients that do not wash their hair every day.

We forged a new relationship with a powerhouse educator named Diane Stevens,. a 30 year veteran in the salon industry. She has two locations in the Washington, DC area specializing in natural curly hair for African American women. Although she does cater to all women and their multi-textured hair, she has a passion for naturally curly hair. We were awe struck by what she was sharing with us that is from behind the scenes that basic salons do vs what should be done to really take better care with the right products and the right hair textue. Woman today are desiring to let their natural curly hair dry naturally with products that enhance their natural self. Corporate professional woman are enjoying letting the curl be wavy, soft and moisturized without seeing frizz. She shared some beautiful balayage techniques that were so pretty that anyone can have them in their hair regardless of the tightness of the natural curl. She shared some hair color techniques with glazes that are going to give more shine to the hair while protecting the curl and preventing breakage which is so prevalent in the curly world. Diane inspired us by talking about women and the fearlessness of stepping out of our comfort zones, eliminating myths on caring for naturally tight curls and multi – textured hair and treatments that we can do to:

1. help stimulate hair growth
2. moisturize with weightless products that penetrate the scalp
3. normalizing a dry itchy scalp with some of oil light weight oils
4. introducing a new facial treatement for the scalp (New Indulge Secret)
5. natural curly hair  styling tricks for curly, wavy hair (even I was stunned at what she used, now I’m a fan)
6. educated on what not to use to keep the scalp from getting so tight feeling

The list goes on and on with what we learned in our 4 hour class. She is so superior in her education platform that I closed both salons for the amount of time to train our staff on these new ideas that we will be implementing immediately for our women of color, super curly, wavy, and coarse hair clients.
