Does better hair health come from improved living habits?

Read 5 tips to better health here…to great hair!

Carson

Carson McCord – my son is happy

I’ve always been fascinated with mental health, daily living activities, attitudes that result in great hair, skin and nails.

I have raised my babies to adulthood with two very different lifestyles that were applicable to them. Stay with me here. When we talk about daily living habits, this means what do you do on a daily basis with your habits to  support a positive mental attitude. Happy people have better outlooks in life. Happy people have the magnetic ways of attracting more positive to themselves.

This isn’t to say that angry people couldn’t become happy. They can however; sometimes in life’s happenstances, stuff happens. It’s what you do with what you have before you react to the situation. Reaction, is the key word in how we handle our stress related activities.

Let’s get to the core of better health habits that can help you grow your hair, skin and nails quickly.

  1. Eating more frequently with less volume. Consuming larger or heavy meal before bed can lead to insomnia. Avoid foods like pizza that could cause indigestion. Try nuts or yogurt if you have to eat.
  2. Excercise early in the day. Working out can help you fall asleep faster and more soundly, but you want to avoid close to bed time (even though you might have just got home from work) because your body secrets the Cortisol for your stress hormone that is the last thing you want to stimulate.
  3. Quiet! Loud noises can be distracting and detrimental to sleep. Use white noise to help you relax or app. Try head phones to block out noise.
  4. Dim the lights. Lights signal your brain to make melatonin, the hormone that induces sleep. Dim all lights at least 2 – 3 hours prior heading to bed. This will relax you and help you chill out. With some of the oils such as Lavender can be applied to the wrist or in a mist for an aromatherapy candle to enhance your mood. My daughter uses this for her twins to help them relax and go to sleep before they go to bed.
  5. Avoid naps during the day. Now if you get up early and work out then you have the flexibility in your day that you are up another 8 – 12 hours then catch a 20 minute nap. If you are feeling the slump (like I do during my work day) take a walk, eat lunch that is light. My sister takes a nap at the same time during the day and she will say I have to take a nap and then she calls me back right after her moment.

Carson soupYou know the saying, “what goes in must come out” through your hair. If you lead a healthy and happy lifestyle even though you have some work stress or family stress, your body will respond accordingly. We recommend supplementing your diet with CollagenBlu learn more here.

I know that you may go with Paleo, South Beach diets, Vegan or whatever you choose to do, its about BALANCE. Of course. I prescribe to chocolate for my attitude and large diet coke Shh… Is this good for you? The soda is not good for you. I drink so much water to offset the volume of soda I drink.

When my son was hurt at 11 weeks of age, he was totally dependent on me to provide healthy foods and the other items that are already described above. It’s easier to manage others more than ourselves. I have had to go organic and vegan foods until my son became iron deficient! As you can see in the photo the vegetables are whole then I would puree them into a smooth consistency in order for him to eat his food by mouth. When my son was injured, he had lost his ability to chew. In order to keep him healthy, the flavors of food needed to be tasty yet, give him energy and easy to digest. Carson soup

Health needs to be managed well and you can also get blood tests to see what lies beneath. Blood levels will tell you more of what is going on to help you manage your potassium, magnesium and cholesterol, etc.

All of these great tips will help you keep your body healthy that leads to fabulous thicker, fuller hair and nail growth. After a year and 1/2, my hair  has recovered from stress, lack of sleep and you can see the difference between where the hair is health and the ends that are thin and stribbly.

Read about some new tips to prevent cancer, reduce high blood pressure that could stoke a stroke and eliminate acne.

Alex Crawford, the editor of Lather, Scrubbed & Loved Magazine has really removed all of the clutter and got to the point of

some great topics that will help you with daily living habits which will increase your level of living by preventing potential stroke, preventing cancer by eating these certain foods and how to eat them, and lastly ways to eliminate acne. If acne is not managed, over the years scarring can take the place. prevent cancer

Here are some of the great reads to implement:

3 Beach Bag Must Haves – what’s in your beach bag?

Fight Disease with Olive Oil – I found this article really informative

Roasted Beet Salad with Goat Cheese – I made this and it was delicious!

Plant Therapy – Cannabis Sativa – Pot without the delirium. If this were available like it is today, I would have implemented this for my son Carson. I believe this is helpful. See what  you think and let us know after you read it.

Beating Joint Blues with BLU – a new treatment that you can do at home to clean out and brighten acneic skin.

Did you know that we subject our children to potential danger taking them to the beach?

Most cancer stems from being exposed to the direct sunlight at the beach, the pool and anywhere that skin wasn’t exposed without sunscreen. The heat and UVA and UVB direct rays are so harmful that the sensitive skin could be starting already before the age of 10 due to sun exposure. Use sunscreen that has an SPF 30 or above.

Sunscreen only works when it is applied multiple times during the sun exposure. If you are in the water it will go away except now we are killing fish with the sunscreens. I was recently at Fenwick Island which was heavenly during my stay with friends.

I used to stay hours from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. just laying in the sun or swimming in the water. Not anymore, I have to dive under the canopy to take a reprieve from the intense heat. My feet were screaming because the sand was so hot. I had sunscreen, I had moisturizer and I still got burnt because I didn’t reapply right away. I fell asleep and my back and shoulders are sore to the touch. Looking around to the other beach goers, I was stunned to see that they brought their dogs. Some big dogs and some little dogs. I was looking for water bowls and didn’t see any. I was looking for the babies and their mamas to put on sunscreen. I hope they did because I had to look away. Knowing what I know about preventing cancer at such an early age with babies and children could be dangerous for those babies. Guinot Sun Logic Anti-Ageing Sun Cream SPF 30

Guinot Sun Logic Anti-Ageing Sun Cream SPF 30 protects and repairs sun damaged skin.

This advanced sunscreen prepares skin for sun exposure, protects during sun exposure and repairs afterward. The powerful sunscreen prevents photoaging and protects against blue light exposure while also infusing skin with anti-aging ingredients. Arnica balances capillaries and elastin while vegetable-derived melanin protects from blue light. Elastoprotectin, extracted from witch hazel, prevents the breakdown of tissues to protect elastin fibers and prevent wrinkles. Protect your skin against aging and sun damage with Guinot Sun Logic Anti-Ageing Sun Cream SPF 30 – $43.00 Smells like orange sickle.

All sunscreen should be applied BEFORE you hit the beach, AFTER you get out of the water, BEFORE you go to bed or go out for the night to prevent damage. We use two types of sunscreen that we agree with:

Rhonda Allison Daytime Defense SPF 30 – excellent for moisturizing and for protection from UVA and UVB – A great daily daytime defense with UV protection of SPF 30. Protects your skin from environmental damage and provides soothing and moisturizing benefits throughout the day. Broad-spectrum sunscreen for your face and neck helps provide the best in antioxidant protection. Recommended for all skin types. $23.00

All of our sunscreens are available at our Indulge Salon 970 S George St, York Pa 17403  or Call 717.846.4424 or Georgia location at 1104 market st, Greensboro, GA 30642

Curious weren’t you?

California Avocados are a fresh, natural, wholesome part of a healthful diet.  They’re irresistibly rich in flavor and, avocados also provide vital nutrients and phytochemicals.  Diets rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of some types of cancer and other chronic diseases.

There are 13 vitamins that the body absolutely needs: vitamins A, C, D, E, K and the B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12 and folate). Avocados naturally contain many of these vitamins.

I have some favorite recipes that I love to use during the summer that give you regular Vitamin B’s onthat are not absorbed by the body. I love the buttery texture when I sink a bite of these in my mouth. You don’t even need dressing with these. Eat them alone or marry them with some lovely red tomatoes that are rich in Licopene.

  • VITAMIN K (6.3 mcg/8% DV per serving) – Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in blood clotting. It is known as the clotting vitamin, because without it blood would not clot. Some studies indicate that it helps in maintaining strong bones in the elderly. Did you know that we can now add Vitamin K to our skin care treatments to help infuse your skin topically to help you achieve more of a skin balance?
    • VITAMIN E (.590 mg/4% DV per serving) – A fat-soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant that protects the body tissue from damage caused by unstable substances called free radicals.  Free radicals can harm cells, tissues, and organs.  They are believed to play a role in certain conditions associated with aging.  Vitamin E is important in the formation of red blood cells and helps the body use vitamin K.  At lower levels, vitamin E may help protect the heart.  Vitamin E also plays a role in healthy skin and hair.
    • LUTEIN (81 mcg) – A carotenoid (a natural pigment) that may be associated with a lower risk of eye diseases. Lutein is an important antioxidant that may help your eyes stay healthy while maintaining the health of your skin. It provides nutritional support to your eyes and skin and has been linked to promoting healthy eyes through reducing the risk of macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in adults 65 years of age and older.

Here is a quick recipe from Chef Curtis Cooke of The Original Golden Door, an executive spa. Chef Curtis is originally from Texas and when he discovered these Avocados he fell in love and created all types of foods that are healthy and delicious.

Chilled Avocado Soup with Sweet Corn Salad

Serves 4

Soup:

3 Avocados, peeled and chopped

  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 cups vegetable stock
  • 1 tbsp. Tabasco sauce
  • sea salt to taste
  • In a blender, puree all ingredients, adjusting the consistency with vegetable stock, as needed.

Top with:

  • 1 cup sweet corn, grilled and cut from cob
  • 1/4 cup red onion, chopped
  • 2 tbsp. lime juice
  • 1 tbsp. cilanatro, finely chopped ‘

Grill the corn to blister the kernels, shuck and cool. Combine with remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly. Spoon over soup. Certainly feel free to add cilantro, peppers, crab, pink peppercorns or pickled red onions. Thanks Chef Curtis!

I thought this was a great recipe to try. As you may know, my son has to have all of his foods pureed in order to help his brain process the intake of food. This type of food goes in at a slower pace that tells the brain “hey, something is coming!” therefore he can manage the food going into his mouth, on the tongue and can manage to swallow without choking. I’m always searching out recipes that will engage the full senses of vitamins and minerals plus the absolute pleasure of taste. This is one of those recipes that is a keeper.

If you don’t like the texture of Avocado’s, feel free to have your infusion of vitamins into your skin to keep your skin rejuvenating with our newest facial treatment that includes a healthy dose of Vitamin K. We started carrying a newer skin care line that is loaded with enzymes that will infuse the skin with customized minerals to help your specific skin’s needs. No need to overload with unnecessary nutrients. It’s always best to give your skin what it needs from the inside out but we all need a little help from our friends.

Colour Explosion Party: T-12 days

Red heads have a reputation for being temperamental, passionate, and wild! But the diverse shades of red, running from the deepest auburn to the brightest carrot top, show that no two are alike — in looks or personality! Let’s explore some other “red myths” and look at the benefits of red.

Salon York PA Does it cost more to insure a red car?

It probably costs a good bit to insure this sweet ride, but no, it’s a myth that insurance premiums are higher for red cars.

Are Redheads More Sensitive to Pain?Salon York PA

It seems that red hair is attributed in part to a gene mutation called melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) which also influences a group of receptors in the brain regarding sensitivity to pain. A 2009 study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association showed that redheads were indeed more sensitive to pain and needed more anesthesia for dental procedures. “We have different receptors for pain in our body, and those receptors respond differently, whether you’re taking aspirin or acetaminophen,” Stelian Serban, MD, director of acute and chronic inpatient pain service and an assistant professor of anesthesiology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, as quoted in WebMD.

Salon York PA Healthy Red Foods

An apple a day …? Apparently apples aid in digestion, helping to keep you regular. Strawberries help lower cholesterol, and cherries can lower your blood pressure. Beets are touted as one of the newest “super foods.” My personal favorite on a weekend morning? A spicy Bloody Mary.

Ready to try a new shade of red? If not on your hair, how about on your nails or lips? Call Indulge Salons at 717.846.4424 to see how we can spice up your looks with RED!

I thought that might catch your interest. As you know, I have hit the magic years of the 40’s which is supposed to be the 30’s. Um, not sure about that statement. I feel like I’ve been working more than I ever have. I know we only have 24 hours in a single day but like you how in the world do we find time for ourselves in our 23 hour busy day doing what we do?

In your mind, your thinking well time management Kimberly. Of course, I love productivity and making the best use of my time. Unfortunately, I feel like I play catch up in many areas especially with taking care of myself. Those of you that know me personally, know that I don’t get much sleep. Some of this by choice and other nights not. Daily living can really break your skin down and so can managed stress. I really don’t think I’m stressed however according to some studies I’ve been reading maybe I might have a little.

What is really on my mind right now is my skin and how I look in the mirror to see what is looking back at me is not the 20 year old skin I used to have. It used to be firm and sunken in at the right places. Truly, I fight hard to maintain some youth by eating Hershey Golden Almond Nuggets, McDonalds soda in the morning, five workouts a week and taking some really potent vitamins and supplements through Advocare. I started searching out the best supplements to help my skin from premature aging due to stress and lack of sleep. What I found was vitamins that athletes use to maximize their performance. I feel like I’m a performer every day and that I needed some extra help. I feel so much better which leads me back to the topic at hand, my facial skin.

I have been using Guinot skin care for years now. Is it a miracle overnight to moisturize and hydrate, yes but these products do much more than that surface activity. I know everyone wants to look younger in fifteen minutes but it “ain’t” happening as we say in York County, PA. Nope, you need to look at this from a different angle. You didn’t gain weight overnight well your wrinkles didn’t happen overnight either. So let’s work on our expectations of our skin. What I’ve learned is that taking a proactive approach to our skin will help us increase the elasticity (like a rubberband) will improve and snap back as you need it to. Our collagen (like a netting underneath) has to stay firm in order to keep us pulled together. We need to fight this all the way girls! Saggy necks, saggy bags under the eyes is not helping our youthful appearance. We must feed our skin daily either with supplements and good skin care that has been researched in France and it does work.

I’ve been using a serum which dives into your pores at a faster and more effective rate than a cream does. I still use Age Logic Cellulaire over top Time Logic Age Serum from Guinot. Our skin care therapist, Priscilla, tells me to switch up the products so that my skin doesn’t get used to it therefore, I will still get the best benefits from these amazing products. The Time Logic Age Serum is used at night and during the day for me. This serum is really light and I put it on my face as soon as I’m out of the shower. I don’t even dry my body off till I apply the serum on my face. The reason is that anything that is on your body within seconds will be absorbed into the skin in seconds. How do I know this? I read a medical journal regarding absorption ratesof how quickly products can be absorbed into the skin

Salon York PA

Age Logic Cellulaire is a light moisturizer that has 56 actives and anti-oxidants that help fight the aging process. Retores smooth skin texture

. I know I’m a weirdo but be glad that I am because I can continue to give you valuable information to help you maximize your skin creams and lotions.

The Time Logic Age Serum has a revolutionary formula that repairs my skin at night when our bodies are supposed to be at rest. The body naturally does repairing on the cells and rejuvenates you. All of the experts say you should still try to get at least 8 hours of sleep and 8 glasses of water into your body per day. It doesn’t play catch up so take advantage of what you have. This formula does work during the day and can be worn underneath your makeup so no worries about caking or being to thick on your face. It’s so light you don’t even know you have it on. This serum will stimulate the metabolic energy of the cells for repairing.

It’s good to know that when I close my eyes at night that at least my Time Logic is working for me while I sleep. I can just picture all of these little agressive construction workers going to work on my cells repairing and rejuvenating my skin and protecting it for the next day. Be good to yourself girls!

If you want more information about repairing your skin and preventing wrinkles, go to

Indulgesalon.com/skinpeels for an advanced level of skincare or call the salon at 717.846.4424 to speak directly to our skincare therapist, Priscilla.

It’s not just skin deep. No way. It goes deeper than that when you are trying to manage your stress. For example, I’ve been going through some really stressful situations personally that I don’t talk about to anyone except me, myself and I.

As you problem do the same, I discovered that my skin was incredibly itchy and I couldn’t get a release on that itchy problem. It wasn’t dry skin, it wasn’t dehydrated because I drink enough water to fill a camel hump on a hot day. That sounded good didn’t it? Well, when you are trying to manage your stress day to day it is a critical component linked to the relationship between the emotions and teh skin. The prevention of chronic inflammatory skin conditions, and new research has shown that the neuropeptides released by the skin when someone is under stress not only can create inflammation that is localized (like my itchy patches) can potentially trigger acne, roseacea or psoriasis – but can also travel to the brain.  I’ve seen really bad psoriasis and believe me you do not want this condition. It’s hard to get rid of and it can travel all through your body. Adult acne is not fun and as adult women we take this harder than when we were younger.

According to the dermatologist Dr. Richard Fried, who presented the skin-stress link at the Academy of Dermatology’s Summer Academy, neuropeptides that reach the brain can increase the reuptake of such neurotransmitters as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. All of these chemicals that regulate our emotinos. Remember I had just been to the brain class last month that talked about the rush we get when we do something whether its bad or good such as eating a bag of Hershey Golden Nuggets gets the same dopamine rush as a hit of Heroine. The brain does not know the difference. The brain does what we tell it to do and will respond with “let’s keep your body happy” It will seek out the happiness and basically rinse and repeat the activity just to keep you happy. If only our guys were more like this but thats for another topic.

Again, we’ve got this huge Dopamine rush from our activity that maybe it wasn’t a happy experience that utlimately results in a vicious stress-skin-stress cycle. Unaddressed stress may also affect skin carrier function (that’s were we at Indulge Salon in York Pa come in) allowing internal and external irritants to exacerbate conditions. Dr. Fried believes that a combination of stress management techniques such as yoga, mediations, tai chi cognitive behavioral therapy and skin therapies is the best approach to combating both problems. I didn’t have to have a doctorate to know that. No offense, I speak to women every day and I’d like to add that most women do everything for their families and nothing for themselves. Nothing. I see women working so hard on a daily basis to cook, clean, working and trying to elevate themselves in their careers and manage the structure to raise decent citizens that can be self sufficient.

The bonus to giving to yourself means that this is YOUR TIME and you need to be a pinch selfish with YOUR TIME so that you can give again. It’s like you are a well and the well gets close to drying up unless you give back to yourself. Our skin care therapists are so good at what they do that you don’t need to want for anything. You are comforted by laying back on a cushy table, creams  and lotions that will remedy your skin and heal your emotions while you are in a private comfortable room. She spreads her fingers confidently over your face and neck easing the stress from your body. If this is stress management, then by golly girls it’s our time and it cost less than medication. You can even fall asleep if you like. If you snort, it’s ok where all girls. check out our facial treatments at

Excessive hair loss can be depressing especially when you comb your hair in the morning and see the hairs lingering behind in your comb or brush. I bet you are wondering how in the world has this happened? Am I not healthy? Is there a problem? Is there enough to donate to locks of love for cancer patients?

I personally thought this was interesting since I am going through this myself at age 47. I just had to reach over and do a quick calculation on my age. You think I would pay attention to this more but I really think age is not important until your hair starts to shed drastically like mine is right now. When I shower, I can see my long hair being washed down the drain along with the shampoo and conditioner. I see long hair that has been applied to the bathroom floor because when I blow dry my  hair and I am in a hurry, the hair blows everywhere and I don’t have time to clean it up asap because it’s still wet. I know it sounds gross but I do clean it up. I certainly cannot live in that enviroment either.

Read on if your hair is falling out excessively

Back to my story. As I brush my hair with the special flatbrush that is made for longer hair, I visually see a new padding develop that is not the brush padding if you get my meaning. I am disgusted once again that this aging stuff is starting to happen. I see it with my clients in the salon. I give them great advice on their hair and forgot about my own. I learned that I have to take my own advice, too.

Typical falling out is normal when you brush or comb your hair. Naturally you will lose about 80-100 hairs per day. This is normal. Scalp hair grows in cycles, with each hair follicle undergoing 10-30 cycles in its lifetime. The cycles are comprised of three phases of growth:

  • Anagen or active phase, which can last two to eight years
  • Catagen, or transitional phase, which typically lasts four to six weeks
  • Telegen, or resting phase, which continues two to three months

Each follicle works on its own such as an independent person, while one is growing the other may be resting. Kind of like a couple in their day to day activities. One is taking out the trash while the other is sitting on the couch watching golf……..This keeps the same amount of hairs on the head which is approximately 100,000 on a healthy scalp. As dead hair is released, loss of about 80-100 hairs a day is normal. More than that you may be in hair trouble. https://www.indulgesalon.com/finelimp for a coupon towards a hair treatment.

Lets GET TO THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM

Alopecia is a medical term for hair loss, but there are many types under that heading. For instance, hereditary hair loss can result in a pattern of bald spots which is different from alopecia caused by medication or postpartum changes and definitely stress related. I can tell you from real experience with my customers, that stress changes the body and the cells inside to cope with the trauma going on in your life. The body will do what it has to do naturally to protect you and your insides. It works on auto pilot, however; if you are under some major stress this can overload your body’s protective powers and you might need some assistance in combating this stress until you get over it or through the events. Did you know that stress in the body can cause effects for three years. I learned this through one of my brides that I cared for years ago. She had alopecia areata which is hair that is lost in patches. We did a great job camoflaging her baldness for her wedding day, but can you imagine her trying to deal with this?

The type of hair loss a client experiences will dtermine the best treatment options. We start off with analyzing the scalp on a basic level at the salon. We check to see if there are any abrasions, we check to see if its just patchy, we ask questions such as diet related to proteins and we also check the emotional levels of our client by asking if they are going through some rough patches in their life. Hair is emotional because this is an accessory to our image and our looks are important to us and its the first thing we look at when we look at another person. Unless you are a dentist or work in the teeth field such as my sister, that is exactly what they zoom in on. Your teeth.

There is generally a trigger that sets off hair loss. If you have an event that was stressful in your life, the hair loss can start three months later. If the event has not stopped, the hair loss may result in a chronic situation such as hormonal changes like childbirth and menopause. The changes in your diet can really change your hair texture and the density of the hair. We have seen clients that went all out on a high protein diet which led to major weightloss but also resulted in LONG TERM hair loss that did not come back.

When someone is really stressed according to the Suddenly Slimmer Wellness Center and Day Spa in Phoenix, Spa director, Jeanie Marcelino says “they usually find high levels of metals such as copper and iron in the hair during higher stress levels.” I find this fascinating information due to the fact that we work with well water every day and treat the hair differently with well water products.

Now most of what I see is hormonal and when women start the pre-menopause stage it will take about 10 years to work through the system. That part of the aging process stinks and I say fight it all the way girls. Get yourself some KAVA KAVA at your local vitamin store to help yourself with those unnatural mood swings and pick up some Biotin supplement to help yourself start to relax and start growing some hair back. Is it a miracle? Nope. This is a supplement that you can add to your mix of vitamins in the morning and make sure you check with the doctor so you don’t have a conflict. Lastly check on your eating habits. If you aren’t eating and you aren’t feeding your body the healthy greens that you need along with the right amount of protein during your stressors, then get back to basics and start today.

I couldn’t wait to share this recipe with you. It is scrumptious!

A friend of mine shared this with me and I thought I would try it. It has a bit of southwest flair to it and normally I don’t go to far out of my recipe box with this type of food but I did and WOW! I ate almost the whole bowl. It’s good it’s low calorie so eat up my friends.

Here it is: Corn and Avocado Salad

2 large cans of corn (Del Monte)

1 large ripe avocado

1 small red onion (I don’t use much because I don’t like bad breath however; you use as much as you want)

1 can of black beans

1 large tomato cut into small cubes

add a bunch of cilantro

add a bunch of basil (I love basil so I added a lot)

1/4 cup of virgin olive oil

2 tbsp of champaign vinegar but if you don’t have this just use your red vinegar

pinch of kosher salt

pinch of black pepper

swish it all together and you have a side dish or make it a meal and share with some friends. This tastes great on salad.

the health benefits of avocados are numerous to mention however; I will be happy to list a few

1. great for moisturizing and nourishing your skin to a healthy glow

2. aids in preventing breast cancer

3. aids in lowering blood pressure

4. has 25 essential nutrients such as vitamin A, B, C, K, Copper, Iron, Magnesium, and Potassium. Imagine eating 2-3 bananas to the equivalent of 1 avocado.

5. improves a heart because of the Vitamin B6 and folic acid this helps lower the homocysteine which is associated with heart disease. for more healthy information about Avocados go to http://www.healthonlinezine.info/health-benefits-of-avocados.html

Enjoy!! say thanks to Jayson for the recipe
