Honoring Administrative/Secretary’s Day

Appreciate your professional administrative secretary that has helped you get the job done in your business.  They certainly are working with deadlines, making phone calls, appointments for clients, patients, residents, other vendors, making sure your typing is done, grammar is correct, filing, and having to listen to you talk about how much work you have to get done while they are faciliating “getting the job done.”

I’ve been working closely with my front desk salon coordinators on a mammoth project that doesn’t seem to end. We celebrate with high fives when we get through minimal phases. We are updating our salon software that has exposed every single inconsistency from a standard version that wasn’t a problem before but now is a glaring light beam.Once “we” get  this problem cleaned up, it will be smooth sailing for all of our front desk coordinators, our customers, and for me. I can’t wait. Frankly, I don’t have the time in a day to get this done myself. I truly appreciate all of the efforts from my team to get this project off our task list.

Administrative Day

Alex T. Front desk coordinator at our East Market location

As a business owner, I speak for all owners and managers, we get caught up in the big picture of our business operations that we are not considering all of the secretaries, adminstrative professionals that help us clean up our brilliant ideas.

I admit that when these problems are exposed, our administrative professionals really want to tell us, “I’ve been telling you about this for months.” Well, this day on April 27, 2016 is all about celebrating you for telling us and we didn’t listen. I’ll say that we want to listen and we actually do, its just that we prioritize these things until they become a priority. This whole idea of honoring Adminstrative Professionals is about appreciation of all the hardwork they do for us.

Who created Administrative/Secretary’s Day?

National Professional Secretaries Week and National Secretary’s Day was created  in 1952 through the work of Harry F. Klemfuss of Young and Rubicam. Klemfuss recognized the importance and value of the position to a company or business. His goal was to encourage more women to become secretaries. Using his skill and experience in public relations, Klemfuss, promoted the values and importance of the job of secretaries. In doing so, he also created the holiday in recognition of the importance of secretaries.

The name of this special day has changed and evolved over the past few decades. But, the importance of recognizing these vital individuals remains. The two new terms in use today are: “Administrative Professionals” and “Executive Admins”. The two names sometimes mean different roles and responsibilities in different companies and organizations. Both are broader terms, that encompass more positions than the original “Secretary” role.

The name change recognizes and acknowledges that the role has changed significantly since 1952, and for the better at that. In Harry Klemfuss’ day, these positions were the realm of women. Today, you find males in these positions. Being a secretary was a prestigious position in the 50’s. Now, it’s more of a business position with clout and the “gatekeeper” to the owner.

The most common ways of recognizing your Administrative Professional(s) today are:

  • Flowers
  • Cards, often with shopping gift certificates
  • Indulge Salon gift cards from $25 – $100
  • Take them to lunch
  • Candies
  • Assorted Gift Baskets
  • Starbucks gift cards
  • Indulge Pure Originals moisturizing lotion, creams, body butter bar
  • Facial, manicure,
  • Rose Petal Pedicure this month only $35  here

I want to thank all of my administrative front desk coordinators for all of their hardwork, loyalty and for putting up with my crazy ideas and for making Indulge Salon look good. Alex, my daughter for helping me from behind the scenes, Alex T for making sure our new customers get their information being liason to staff and customers, Melissa for social media management and the other stuff you do behind the scenes, Carol for being an awesome trainer, fill in when someone gets sick, changing light bulbs and correcting my grammar when it doesn’t make sense, Becca for being “all that and more” front desk, colorist, fill in where needed,  Amanda for being that management glue and liason, Sarah for putting up with all our training to be manager, and Paris for being a liason to our clients and positive outlook on life. You guys rock!

Look who started Empire Beauty School!

Our very own salon coordinator Alex T. She has been with us for about a year now making appointments at our east york location on Market street. She has been doing a great job coordinating the stylists and while she has been working secretly wanting to be a stylist. She surprised us all. Congratulations Alex T. on your career move. She works part time in the evenings and attending school during the day. We are so excited for her.

Once she got her hands wet with shampooing heads of hair, she thought this might be something she would be interested in for a career. She felt that she would like to cut and color hair like we do in the salon. Once we found out she signed up, all of us were curious what was in her student bag. We laughed about our “bags” when we first startedbeauty school and shared the excitement of shears, mannequin heads that we threw in the back of the car when driving. Those heads took a beating between double process bleaching that broke off hair and haircuts gone bad. Mannequins always enjoy a new challenge without complaint. Rest assured another color application that overprocessed in their mannequin hair was never a problem. Perming class was always fun being asked to be creative with our rods extended about a foot out wrapped on sticks. Wonder where that picture is? Pincurls is a whole other story. I used to hide out in the beauty school bathroom when a “certain” client came in asking for me. As I hunched up my legs so nobody (I thought) could see me from the bottom of the stall, I’d hear a knock on the door. “Kimberly, are you in there?” I couldn’t lie because I was the only one in the stall plus, I couldn’t lie. Period. Every week I’d drag myself out there happily doing the lady with the pincurl addiction. Can honestly say that those pincurls made me a better stylist today.  I’m sure Alex T. will never hide out. She will be the one waiting at the front door for another client to come in escorting her to her station. You go girl!

We don’t envy her with that mannequin head. Looks like a squirrel got lose in it. Good luck Alex T! Look at her smile, your girls at Indulge salon are here for you to help. To our facebook friends and clients we may need you to send in models or friends when she graduates in about 9 months. We will keep you posted of her progress. Stop by and say hi!

I’m in Cleveland Ohio this week searching for answers within my peer group that I love hanging out with over a few days.  My head usually hurts from being stretched into “out of the box thinking”. After the third day of intense talking and hashing out different levels of conversation about a multitude of topics, I reflect and start the implementation.

Do you ever feel that you are being as authentic as you can? Have you learned to enjoy who you really are in this world? When you know that you can make a difference with the people that you work with every day, doesn’t that make you feel good about you? It should. I work with some pretty talented people from front desk to stylists and assistants and managers. They each have their own strengths that build on our culture within our salon to make it a great experience for our customers. I truly enjoy that feeling knowing that you will be greeted happily at our front desk. I enjoy knowing that you will be served well professionally with our technicians. We as a team transform our customers into feeling great about themselves with their hair, skin and nails. Our business is so much more than just doing hair or having a facial. We literally can take the canvas of a person’s face and transform them into beautiful or handsome. Can’t exclude the men right? People in general hide behind the exterior and are afraid to come out or be seen and expose those amazing qualities that are hidden beneath. What I love about the hair industry is that we can help bring confidence to women and men by polishing their appearance. Appearance is just the start of a breakthrough for some people. More confidence and self worth can create a new job opportunity that perhaps was not available at a low point in their life or the instance of a newly divorced woman that was transformed into a more confident person that can now take on full time work, raise the kids and start a new career for herself. That is transforming is believing in yourself to know that you can do anything with some exposure to whats possible.

All of this has not come without effort and pain staking training over the years. Is anything that we work on in our lives without some pain to get there? Wherever the “get there” is for you, think about what steps you have to take and what the actions are that will help propel you towards your success. Success is not about money all of the time even though most of us would associate success with money. As I mature, I think about what success is to me and what the value of that is to me at this point in my life. I choose to hang with people that enjoy me as well as my enjoyment of them. I have a very small circle of people that I spend time with privately due to the limited amount of time I have of freedom available. So I say that being able to let loose to share those fun times or cook with or play with or just be on the phone to share stories is really valuable to me.

It’s a shame to let others influence you in a negative perception which can change our authentic selves. Realize that we must grow and sometimes we receive information about ourselves that may not be positive but is useful in the development of who we are in this world. Somebody may have been sent to share that message with you to help you become more distinctive than you were or to help you see something even  better than where you are right now in your life. Take these moments as gifts. I know I have received a few of these “gifts” myself and I can tell you that I appreciate them.

My thought for you today is to be who you are and enjoy you. Continue to strive to be the best at what you do to share with others and it will come back to you.

It’s been a major topic of conversation these days and you will read about in my emails. If you get a chance to log on as a new visitor on our new home page, you will get to experience the conversations all of us have been having wrapped around what really is professional? Behaviors, “the look”, the verbal skills, the manners especially have been an interesting back and forth amongst us older ones.

The basic manners have flown out of the window. How difficult is it to say “please” or “thank you” when you need something or when someone has done something nice for you? I find it a pleasure to work with my clients and to help them achieve their look. The crazy thing is amongst our newest crowd of professionals is this level of entitlement and lack of manners to say thank you for helping me. Thank you for teaching me this technique or here is a good statement that I would like to hear more often, “is there anything I can do for you?”

Remember that we are here to serve each other every day. If we make someone else’s life a little better by helping them or by helping their day be a little better because you are in it, then that is a gift. I believe that we get caught up in the hum drum of life and would like to blame others for their ho hum attitude. We make choices every day on whether we will be happy or NOT.

If you are grouchy at work or it all starts at home, your attitude will infect or affect others after you have left your haven. Notice the next time you go to work and see how others respond to you. Would this hurt your review at work by your behaviors? Maybe.

At Indulge Salon, we pride ourselves on being the best to serve others. We do get grouncy but we try not to show it. We try to show you that this is your haven away from home. A place of comfort and of knowing that you are safe to be yourself and we can help you discover who you are and who you want to be.

To your happy self!

Colour Explosion Party: T-10 days!
Salon York PA

Marilyn Monroe in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” 1953

If you are like me, you expect science is for brainy people in white lab coats that think really big thoughts and set out to change the course of the world by proving them. Not so much. I do not think I have ever found more conflicting “scientific” studies and results than I have in researching blondes.  I threw in a great little experiment on the color pink at the end too. Hope you enjoy!

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Many studies suggest a stronger sexual attraction to blondes for men seeking to find a mate. Most suggest something along the lines of being subconsciously drawn to a youthful and healthy appearance.  But the truth is there are just as many studies suggesting the attraction to blondes versus brunettes is 100% a matter of personal preference.

Do Blonde’s have a Higher Earning Potential?

David W. Johnston published research in Economic Letters 108 (1), 10-12 investigating the influence of hair color on women’s wages and also their spouse’s wages. He not only found that blonde women receive higher wages, but they tend to attract wealthier husbands. Hmm … maybe highlights?

Salon York PA Baker Miller Pink

Two U.S. Navy officers names Baker and Miller were encouraged to test the theory of a researcher by the name of Alexander Schauss on the effects of the color pink in a Naval Correctional Facility. So they mix a gallon of white latex paint with one pint of red semi-gloss outdoor trim paint. The actual code for this color is R:255, G:145, B: 175 —sounds much more scientific than “we had a gallon of this here white and decided to mix it with one of these little cans of red …” And yet now, no kidding, it’s referred to as Baker Miller Pink or sometimes drunk-tank pink.

Salon York PA In 1979, Schauss managed to convince Baker and Miller to paint some of the prison confinement cells in the Seattle WA facility pink in order to determine the effects this might have on prisoners. The results showed that 15 minutes of exposure to the pink cells was enough to reduce aggression and violent behavior. Later studies have suggested that being exposed for a longer period of time may reverse that calming effect. For more visit www.colormatters.com/color-and-the-body/drunk-tank-pink

How about a new shade of blonde for your summer hairdo? Maybe a few pink extensions to give it an unexpected pop of color (one that perhaps has a calming effect?)? Call Indulge Salons at 717.846.4424 to explore colorful options!

A friend of mine is re-entering the workforce after being a stay at home mom and then working from home for many years. She scheduled a consult at Indulge Salon at 970 South George Street location to create a plan for updating her hair cut, color, some new cosmetics, a manicure, and an enhanced skin care routine. The professionals there were able to get her started immediately with a new French haircut and

some Youngblood cosmetics (read more at www.indulgesalon.com) and create a plan that included some standing appointment times for updating her other beauty needs as she starts her new career. At Indulge Salon York, PA we are experts on these things—this was fun and easy for us and quickly turned into a time for all of us to celebrate the adventure my friend was about to embark on! But then she asked if stockings (or nylons) were still required in the office …

While we could offer some thoughts on what to wear to a new office job, pantyhose seemed to no longer follow clear rules of office etiquette in 2013. The Indulge Salon York, PA staff was so evenly divided on the answer to that question, we did what we always do to find answers to life’s important questions: we Googled it. And what did we find out? It all depends. The best advice was to wear them and see what other people did—especially senior management—taking your cue from them. For more, check out this link to “What to Wear to Work” in Real Simple magazine at http://www.realsimple.com/beauty-fashion/clothing/wardrobe-basics/what-to-wear-work

It prompted some great conversation about the evolution of etiquette though. One of our stylists referred us to this great local York blog quoting some expectations of the female students at York’s Cottage Hill College for Young Ladies circa 1870. www.yorkblog.com/smart/2013/02/05/book-smarts-tracing-the-evolution-of-etiquette/ Our favorite quote from the school handbook is:

“Ladies are not permitted to receive the visits of gentlemen with whom the officers of the School have no acquaintance, unless sanctioned by letters of introduction from parents. And it is exceedingly desirable that parents designate the persons with whom they wish their daughters to correspond.”

Back to my friend re-entering the workforce—she is having a blast and looking great! Do you have the right strategy and team of professionals to help you look your best? We’d love to know what your experience has been in the workplace and love to help you if you are returning to work. Call us at 717.846.4424 to schedule an appointment at either of the Indulge Salons York, PA … you don’t need a note from your parents.

Handing in your resignation letter is uncomfortable.Salon York PA

Let’s face it-You’ve planned it now for weeks, thought about what you were going to say, how you were going to say it, and even thought about a few “Office Space” walk out scenarios. The big day finally arrives, and you.just.do it. Resigning from a position should feel, taste, and breathe bittersweet. It means you actually cared about what you did. You may have even had a passion for it. It means, although you may have had a love/hate relationship with your job, you still cared about your position.

It’s always sad leaving a job that you care for, but the thing to remember is that there is more to look forward to. There are doors wide open, and sometimes smacking us in the face, for opportunity. I think that we often look for a job that is “in our skill range,” and we aren’t open to opportunities that may challenge us. Don’t fear opportunity or the chance to expand your skills.

When the day calls for you to close the door to an old job, keep your spirits high knowing that your future holds something good, something new, something that will only help you to grow as an individual. Hopefully, it will mean an increase in your earnings as well! One can hope, right?!

Embrace the bittersweet resignation. Reminisce. Move Forward.

Live your life…Full Throttle.

Salon York PA Networking isn’t just about making sure your IP address is correctly connected to your network adapter.  Networking in life is about sharing information, services, and business cards with the intent to make a connection that will be useful either personally or professionally.  Networking is one of the best ways to accomplish something when it comes to your professional career. It could be that you may want to make a connection with several local businesses to invite them to purchase your product or service. You may need help finding a job, and you meet several different people who know of an opportunity, or know someone else that has an open position. It’s quite amazing, actually.

A friend of mine joined an exchange club and she was, in fact, looking for a different job opportunity. Through the people she met at her exchange club, she was able to have several people point her in the right direction to make connections with other individuals. The more people you are able to meet, the more opportunity you create for yourself to be put on the track you want to be. It’s said that each person knows at least seven other people, and those seven  people know seven people that you are familiar with.

Everyone is interconnected, and we get to know others through networking. You can do this by joining an exchange club, lions club, small business organization, young professionals organization, volunteering, and the simplest—socializing. The more people you are able to connect with and exchange information (phone number, email, etc), the better network you create for yourself. People are able to influence your pathway, but you’ve got to make the connection first. You must do this by:

1. Going outside of your comfort zone to talk to people you don’t know.

2. Be prepared. Print business cards for yourself! Include name, email, phone number.

3. Know what you’ve got to offer. Networking can’t be only about you. You must be able to offer something to the other person.

4. Work on that handshake! Always extend your arm–straight-firm grip, one shake, and release. You have those people you like a couple shakes…work with it. And..ALWAYS look the person in the eye as you’re shaking their hand.

If you’re not the type of person to be as outgoing, make an impression instead. Make yourself memorable.

Remember that networking doesn’t mean that you can be in it all for yourself. You’ve got to bring something to the table. Can’t be zero give and only receive. You’ve got to offer something to the people so willing to help you out. What do all great relationships survive on? Give and Take.

Live your life full throttle by getting out there and networking. Who knows what connections you’ll make.

To recap from yesterday’s post: We talked about how sometimes our lives need a little
Spring Cleaning action.  There are several facets of our lives that need “weeding” so that we can flourish! Part 1 touched on Section 1; Self. “Self” has three subsections: Body, Beauty, Attitude. If you missed yesterday’s post you’ll want to go and read that. You don’t want to miss out on a VERY important facet of your life.

Moving on to Part 2. This section is all about your Career.

Salon York PA Whether you are in a job or a career (yes, there is a difference), your happiness is what really counts. It’s absolutely amazing how, if you’re unhappy with your job, it can affect many other areas in your life. If you find that you are stressed at your job all the time, and no matter what, you can’t stop stressing or thinking about (in the bad way–worrying all the time), then you need to stop. Really. Just stop and think about how your career or job is affecting you mentally, physically, emotionally. You deserve to be happy when you go to work in the morning, and your customers, or the people you serve deserve to have great products and services offered to them.

Really think  about what you want in a career. If you have big dreams, start taking the small roads to get to the highway to get to that gold at the end of the rainbow. You have to start somewhere to get where you want to end up. So, spring clean your Career. If you aren’t doing what you love, then get out, and figure out what makes your engine roar.

I bet you’ll be thinking about this post while you’re on your way to work tomorrow…If so, let me know your thoughts by commenting!

Ps. You guessed it! Part 3 comes tomorrow with talk about spring cleaning your Spirituality! Stay tuned…
