Acne that turns into Cystic is one of the hardest acne types to reduce or eliminate. At Indulge salon we have been able to achieve relief of cystic and agitated acne. This type of acne is demoralizing creates doubt and low self esteem after years of “dealing with this type of acne.

One of our young teenage clients came to us to figure out how to “get rid” of her acne on her face, shoulders and back. I was moved that she trusted me to guide her. I remember saying to her that this is a two way show with her maintaining certain behaviors and habits at home while I worked with her treatments weekly. After 1 year of working with her we both were able to see a huge difference in her skin texture, the reduction of cystic acne. The biggest difference has been in the winter of 2019 with introduction of some new treatments that allows her collagen to work more efficiently weekly. 

She has been on medications to fight the acne since ten years old, however; her parents were concerned about her organs as any parent would be. Eventually, she did stop taking medications because she was getting results working with our treatments. I must say in some instances medication will be needed but in her case, she found the results spoke for themselves. Her breakouts were less, her cystic acne was getting to be in just some selected areas vs all over the back and shoulders.

What is Cystic Acne?

It is the most serious type of acne. It develops when cysts form deep underneath the epidermis in the dermal layer. It feels bumpy appearing like a pimple but is not squeezable to release the bacteria to heal. The oil dead skin cells plus the accumulation of bacterial make happy bed fellows in the skin causing “congestion” or clogging of the pores. it gets even more complicated than just those elements, it just seems to get worse.

This type of acne tends to get worse in the teens because of hormonal imbalances, oily skin, and usually teens. I’ve personally worked with teens and adults that have this type of acne. It is emotionally charged every time our teens look at their skin. Their friends may have clear skin and when they look in the mirror they are more self conscience hopeful that for once in their life they will have smoother acne free skin.

What does Cystic acne look like?

• looks like a boil type bump
• whitish almost clear on the top of the hard bump
• redness with irritation around the edges of the acne bump
• painful to the touch
• patches of the bumps surrounded closely by other bumps

This type of acne is not just located primarily on the face. It can be congested on the lower back, the top of the shoulders, the middle of the back where the bra strap connects and the neck and the arms. Bacteria can thrive near the bra strap in droves!! The behind the ears can be commonplace too!

Is medication for acne the answer?

In most acne cases originate at the dermatologist office because this is the first line of defense for teens and their parents. Parents are more concerned about the drugs that are administered that will affect the liver. I do want to add the benefits of some of the drugs that are given in severe cases. After this is consistently in the body system, we have found that using our facial services such as Hydra Clean, we found success in the reduction of acne breakouts, diminished cystic acne. The larger cystic acne bumps, rough textured skin start to smooth out.

Dermatologists can prescribe Accutane which is the most popular mediation used to treat acne. This ingredient is derived from Vitamin A, taken in tablet form. 85% of patients do see improvements with a few months. Spironolactone (Aldactone) is another alternative prescription treatment for cystic acne. This medication is used as a diuretic to help treat edema and high blood pressure. Of course professionals are looking for for medications to reduce ace and control inflammatory acne. This type is great for lower facial acne around the jawline. Oral contraceptives were and are a viable option in women. Its effective during the hormonal fluctuations related to the menstrual cycle. Birth control pills contain estrogen which helps regular the overall hormone levels and possibly reduce acne. They aren’t for everyone especially if you smoke, have blood clots and are trying to get pregnant.   Again, serious risks of taking this medication should be considered:

• acne worsening
• bruising
• more skin inflammation
• blood in the urine (this is extreme)
• muscle and joint pain
• headaches
• breast tenderness
• dizziness
• fatigue
• high blood potassium
• menstrual irregularities

Then after starting this and getting another type of problem due to the medication its a push pull situation to deal with the acne problem. Which do you solve first? Back to the doctor they prescribe an antiobiotic, other symptoms may occur such as nausea, diarrhea, sun sensitivity, vomiting and other symptoms.

Over the counter treatments for acne have some of the same generic ingredients however; when someone is experiencing and living with Cystic acne you need more strength, consistency of treatments that are topical and mechanical (physically cleaning the skin) the right ingredients.

How quickly can I see results from the right system?

After working with many clients that have cystic acne along with teenage acne, I was empathetic to their emotional needs and started to search for the best systematic way to manage the acne. I was getting referrals from dermatologists to manage cystic acne in the labia area which is even more painful in the genital area. We treat that area a little differently by waxing and keeping this under control. We will address this in another blog post.

Topical treatments are my very favorite treatments along with galvanic current that stimulates the skin cells charging them with energy that gets those bacteria ridden, clogged pores, and the dead skin cells off their proverbial “couch” and get them moving up to the surface to be discarded. Some retinoids that are prescriptive will cause the skin to constantly peel because they are topically applied daily.

We, my team and I have found that while the peeling action is very important to remove the dead skin that was dormant underneath, emotionally we don’t want to have that occur every day. We developed a system over a year period that has been successful with chemical skin peels with ranged levels for the time of the peel, along with various weekly treatments that kill bacteria, a prescribed skin care treatments that are managed monthly so that we are always breaking down the skin to encourage skin renewal then encouraging nourishment with the layering of vitamins in skin care. The goal of treatment acne and cystic acne is to get it managed if your skin is prone to it so that it will be reduced or eliminated because of both parties you and the new habits that we will teach you and work with you on for constant improvement of change.

Will the scars that I have stay forever?

We cannot promise that all of the scars will leave your body. Scarring will be diminished if you are under a consistent skin care treatment that is rigorous for effectiveness. Never pop cystic acne because this will likely cause scarring. Popping acne or cystic acne can cause the spread of bacterial infections. I’ve seen this and it is ugly for all involved plus the crying and emotionally scarring this leaves is worse than the scarring itself.

Unless the turnover of the cells is ongoing, the scarring will stay due to the lack of turnover of cells. We encourage the turnover with a variety of treatments such as:

AFTER back facial treatments 3 months of specific acneic treatments. 6 months

Imagine how your teen feels when they look in the mirror and see this? Suffering from acne, cysts, blackheads, boils under the skin? Most teens have been youtube guided into how to take care of their skin. Even of they were by mom and dad, they probably wouldn’t take their advice right?

Next option is to the dermatologist for a solution to rid their teen’s skin of acne. They take the medications the Dr. prescribes but without results. I’m not saying all of the teens but we are seeing at the salon. Some teenagers have seen good results from seeing their Docs.  Many teenagers haven’t gotten a result.  Year over year, the skin gets worse. See my teen client. 

They would love nothing more than to rid themselves of the pimples, acne, cysts that plague their young skin. They are embarrassed that someone will see them and look at their shoulders in their tank tops. Their faces are cluttered with clogged pores yet the medication they take from their Dr isn’t working any longer. Mom and dad are concerned about the negative health concerns with the medications that are prescribed for the skin over the years. Liver damage anyone? We are talking 6 years of taking medication that would dry out the skin but wouldn’t take care of the acne or the cysts underneath that no matter what this teen did, they were were not going away.

What do you do when Dr’s advice isn’t getting a result any longer?

We have found a solution to help with the acneic, cysteic skin problems that are usually plaguing teens. How long does it take to clear up acne, cysts or clogged pores?

As long as it takes for your teenager to adopt to new habits in skin care such as cleansing with the correct cleanser. I can’t tell you how many times as a teenager I was using the same cleanser my grandmother was using. We customize the cleanser that will actually give you the clean feeling that you love to have. The next item is what we call a toner lotion. This will keep the skin clean from bacteria day while at school, sports, or at home. Can be used as often as they think about it. We have lotions that will brighten and lighten for darker color tones, hyper-pigmented skin, beta green tea that helps soften those harden pores that will eventually release those toxins.

We may use skin peels or called chemical peels to help remove excess build up of skin cells that are loaded with bacteria. We will be coaching them to wash their sheets 2x per week, their pillow cases every other day (mom buy more please to make your life easier), clean bath towel and wash towel daily. We will show your teen how to wash their face, how to cleanse properly and use the products we recommend. We are your back up support. You and I both know our teens never listen to their parents. While your teenager is learning to cleanse their skin day and night while using the lotion, we will teach your teen to follow up in the a.m. with a blemish control lotion that fights off bad bacteria yet protecting the skin with a slight barrier. Lastly, we highly recommend using a spf of 15 – 30 to protect skin from UVA and UVB rays daily.

At night we will recommend a thorough cleansing before going to bed, toning lotion and utilizing advamced skin care such as Rhonda Allison skin care. We can add additional growth serum to help those cells turnover quicker which helps the older cells slough off quicker getting to the fresh cells. We check back on our teenagers to see how much progress is being made.

Did you know that we subject our children to potential danger taking them to the beach?

Most cancer stems from being exposed to the direct sunlight at the beach, the pool and anywhere that skin wasn’t exposed without sunscreen. My daughter has started a magazine that talks about health of women in fitness, cross fit workouts, tanning and the benefits of it, beauty (my area) supplements to help your hair grow and your insides get healthier. She did a great job launching this magazine digitally available. As you can see, this mom-to-be had to find products that were good for her baby belly full of twins. They are almost 2.5 years old now but still using the products on herself and her twins.

We realized that if we felt that we needed to use more of a vegan product that worked that other mother’s would appreciate using a product that moisturized not just their baby belly but their baby to prevent dry skin, prevents diaper rash as a barrier and helps protect their baby’s fragile skin.

I could give you the roadmap to the thicker fuller hair in a few short sentences but you know me, I have to explain it to you so that you understand what it takes to grow your hair.

Shedding and thinning hair every day in your brush or bottom of the shower?

It’s not bad enough that you see hair in your brush but then you see your hair looking thinner around your hairline, shedding, starting bald patches on top of your head. the hair catches at the bottom of the shower seemingly like a small animal got loose in your shower room. Your self esteem has plummeted plus if you are under a lot of stressful situations, it won’t be getting better any time soon.  You feel like everyone is staring at your bald spot so you flip the top of your hair over it to hide it.

            Fine thinning hair feels like a veil

Hi I’m the owner of a hair salon, Indulge Salon, York, Pa. I have been experiencing what we are talking about today which is thinning, shedding hair or just hair loss for women. I have a small bald patch in the center of my forward in the hairline. Baby fine hairs that have gone astray. Left the herd of hairs so to speak.  It happens to men too. Male pattern baldness is prevalent in 95% both men and women. Staggering statistics I’d say.

Hair loss such as alopecia can be a bald spot located anywhere on the head. This actually happened to my daughter after surgery. She was so stressed out from having her body go through surgery that she had a bald spot the size of a quarter on top of her head and in the nape area. As you can see in the picture the hair is broken off from pony tailing when wet. I stretched the hair from my head so that you could see how much breakage I really had since April, 2017. As I started to experience seeing more hair in my brush, my levels of anxiousness started to get higher because my hair was getting thinner and thinner by the month. I wasn’t sleeping, eating much and overworked to take away my depression of losing my son.

I didn’t realize it at first but looking at the hair on the floor of my bathroom when I washed the floor, I could see how much I was losing. The biggest comment was when my guy said, “Kimberly, I think we have a dead animal in the bathroom.” He was holding a wad of my hair in his hand. EEK! I was mortified at how much was in his hand holding my hair. Well, I forgot to clean out the drain too.

Loss of hair can continue for up to 3 years  after a stressful situation. The root of the stress can be stored in our bodies. You have to find a way to get happy or basically let go of the stress if you can start decreasing any way you can.

New mothers can lose hair because of the hormonal changes a new mother adjusts to. In turn the shedding of hair could be causing more stress while they are recuperating from having baby. New mothers are sleep deprived, not eating right although they are trying and then throw in some dieting to reduce their baby weight which as resulted in the hair thinning and shedding.

It’s prevalent with our new mothers due to the body transitioning from the baby taking the nutrients it needs to normalized hormones.  Stress, lack of sleep over time can cause hair loss. Shedding of hair can go from a few months after birth to up to 3 years. The hair grows 1/2′ per month for the normal person. Its now possible to grow your hair fuller and thicker.

Hugged grandma lately? Skin loose and see through? . The translucent sheer paper thin skin reminds you of crepe paper. That is why it’s described as dry crepey skin. It does tear easily and our older women and men are self concious of their thin, see through skin, therefore; they camoflage by wearing long sleeves.

When we are younger, we moisturize with creams and lotions. As we age, we are more concerned about whether we have the potential of falling taking a step out of bed. How do I know that? I asked my clients what their greatest fear was. It wasn’t dry skin, it was the fear of falling. Older people have lost the confidence to once do what they used to do no matter if their mind is sharp as a tack. The last think they are thinking about is their dry crepe skin.

3 best ways to prevent crepey skin

Skin loses elasticity as we age because of dehydration and other factors. There’s no way to completely avoid crepey skin, but there are a few ways to delay it.

1. Stick to the shade. The most important thing to do, says Dr. Kassouf is to stay out of the sun as much as possible. Also, protect your skin when you’re in the sun with a hydrating sun skin.
2. Make skin hydration a priority. Keeping skin well-hydrated with a good moisturizer helps prevent injury that creates or worsens crepiness.
3. Pay attention to ingredients. Make sure your moisturizer contains alpha or beta hydroxy acids, such as salicylic acid, lactic acid or glycolic acid. These products lubricate and plump the skin, helping reduce that crepey appearance, Dermatologist, Dr. Amy Kassouf says.
