I’m on a roll tonight. It’s 12:00 a.m. and my son is asleep. Everything is quiet and I was thinking about the hair fiascos that happen on a plane when one travels. I always look at hair when I travel and think about how I could transform someone with a new hair color or a haircut that would better suit their features. In York, PA at Indulge salon we have come across some pretty interesting mullets, short bangs with all one length (it’s not the cute kind) and other assemblies of hair creations. So my fave is the person that leans back has a little perspiration working in the back of their neck and of course somebody’s got the air blowing from the top of the aircraft onto your face which means that now you are going to freeze and so is your hair! hee hee. I just had to chuckle because you know whats coming! Yep, when they wake up from their groggy sleep, the haircut no longer looks like a work of art. it looks like a squirrel got roused up and was running around in circles at the back of the head in the nape area. Some hair laid tight to the head, some sticking straight up looking distorted. I can hardly keep it together here describing this. I have met some pretty dynamic people on my flights but I can assure you each trip is interesting. I always get the guy that has nervous gas. I want to throw up every flight. Although the last flight I was on was more pleasant than most. Professional, clean, and pleasant to sit next to. So the next time you are traveling give yourself a little fluff with the hand in the back of your head to unruffle the hair. Butternut blonde with multi-dimensional tones throughout the hair tones

Look I can really appreciate trying to save a buck or two. Lately, we have had this huge influx of banana, orange, stripey hair that has graced our doors to be fixed into this lovely multi-dimensional hair color goddess. Truly, it is a gift that so many people trust us from  their box color dilema to beautiful tresses flowing down their backs. It is not easy trying to dissect the type of box color used to how much to where they put it on and then their arm got tired of holding up the bottle and the applicator splattered everywhere leaving a trail for us to fix. Ugh! Hard for them and hard for us but we love fixing bad color jobs. This is a transformational opportunity for us to take somone that tried to be a blonde and they did their best “god bless their soul”. That saying is from our Salon Manager, Shane Parrish, in Greensboro Ga. He always says that when he knows that our lovely clients really need help. Here in the north we just chuckle and say that’s Shane for you. Then we get to work figuring out how to help our new blonde friend. Doing your own hair can be costly emotionally and financially. It is worth spending the money up front to get a great result rather than trying to do your own thing because in the end you will end up spending more money to get it fixed and then swear you will never do that again. I promise. It happens all of the time. So if you are thinking about it, just put the box down. I know the girl looks cute and her hair looks adorable and sexy and all that on the box but that doesn’t mean that when you put that color from the bottle that you are going to look like the girl on the box. The research and developers have stylists that work in a back room experimenting on different shades and different multiple processes with the box color. Most of these box colors are made with fabric dye. Yep! are you gasping yet? Also, made with metallic dyes which means its hard to get out. I can tell from my own experience that when I was a working girl in one of the those hamburger joints with the big W, I tried different hair colors such as black which I thought would wash out. Who knew that I would have cat black hair for 6 – 8 weeks and it didn’t wash out. I had regrowth of inches before it was slightly fading. Horrible. I felt like a tramp and not cute at all. I tried to play it up with darker makeup and then my dad would say you look like a raccoon. I cried. So girls, I understand when you have box color blunders. Since I’ve attended beauty school and attended many advanced training centers all over the world, I do not recommend the emotional toll it takes on you. The Baby Boomer Peel is the latest addition to Indulge Salon’s lineup of skincare remedies and assorted products. For the whole month of January we’re focusing on bringing out all the fresh skin cells that have been lingering just underneath your dead cornea layer (the outside layer of skin). The cornea is usually just a buildup of less-than-attractive dead skin cells. It also accounts for an accumulation of wrinkles or crow’s feet around the eyes that the self-conscious among us are all too painfully aware of. But what’s so special about our latest solution, you ask? Let me tell you about my experience with the peel so far…

I really wanted to try the latest remedy for the aging process, so I chose to take on the “Baby Boomer Peel.” Yes, I was determined to remove the dead layer of my skin based on our skincare therapist’s recommendation at the S. George Street Indulge Salon in York, PA. She told me that I would look younger (the key word for me) and that this would last about a month. Before beginning the process, she gave me some very helpful information about the peel. Trusting her expertise, I listened to everything but didn’t realize how valuable and super-intelligent she was until the 3^rd day of the peel. Boy, did I appreciate her even more when my skin was starting to peel! But I digress.

Let’s start with the first appointment. This took place on New Year’s Day, which happened to be a Saturday. I lay down on her table and awaited the treatment. She said it would take about 10-20 minutes. I humorously responded “What about the massage?” because I was so ready to relax and be pampered. She claimed that there would be no massage and that the process would actually be aggressive! I was disappointed, but I dutifully resigned to my fate at her capable hands.

She started everything by explaining that the process requires you to come in with the knowledge that this treatment takes three steps. (How did I miss this?) Here’s the first step: coming in for a thorough facial, massage, and extractions if necessary to remove the white and black heads. The second treatment usually takes place a week after the interrogation of the nose and face and focuses on cleansing. You need to remove all makeup from the night before or, in general, the dirt from the day, and then apply the appropriate level of peel.

I wanted to make that clear because she actually gave me the Baby Boomer Peel. Whoa! Already categorizing me into a group! Drat. Obviously, that’s why I’m in the room receiving this aggressive peel to take off the top layer of my skin and endure the next few days feeling like my face is going to burn off. As she applied the peel, she told me “this may burn a little.” Right…in reality it felt like a raging fire!!!

Our expert then took the courtesy to tell me that my peel was stronger than most. At this point I simply said thank you very much……and immediately had the fan blowing directly on my face to tone down the blazing sensation I was experiencing. I could never get that cool air close enough. Mind you, only a minute into this thing and my skin was already frothing. New word ladies: frothing. This means the chemical peel will actually leave a light film on the skin. No, it’s not like a mocha frappe at the local coffee shop where it froths up by any means!

After about half a minute, she used a warm cloth to remove the light film and my skin felt soooo much better. Ahhhhh…she then continued to rinse it and performed a few other magical procedures while teaching me how to use it. She actually gave me instructions on paper. I was cool with this. I kept thinking ‘”I’m going to look amazing at my conference next week.” She gave me sunscreen too, which is ESSENTIAL for the safety of your skin here. She also gave me a gentle cleanser from Guinot, which is amazingly gentle and not harsh at all.

Our pro kept reminding me not to pull the skin pieces off while peeling during the day. I was told it would feel like my skin was going to crack and make me want to keep peeling it off. It hasn’t been easy for me. I feel compelled to get rid of loose ends; what can I say! I like things nice and neat. Seriously girls, DON’T mess with these loose ends. Continue to moisturize them with a protective barrier and whatever else the skincare specialist tells you to do, because they know their stuff. I listened. She told me that this would be like getting new baby skin. I agree, even after only four days. It still burns a little, yes, but I love how incredibly soft my skin feels! I believe this process has been worth it.

As I come in the door from the gym, I turn to lock the two deadbolts, and glance at my favorite “goal picture.”  My goal picture is an advertisement of this gorgeous athlete model for Syntha-6 Protein Powder.  She has the most amazing rear, and of course, I want my rumple butt to look like that.  I thought that if I put it on my front door that I would see it and subconsciously (along with diet and exercise) look that fantastic sooner rather than later.

I noticed that the page was slightly bent from top to bottom on the right hand side, and suddenly I realized that it was literally plastered to the door.  I think even the tiny tape square (originally the only thing holding it up) has become part of the door. Here’s the dilemma:

I am RENTING.  Obviously, I’ve got to find some way to get this picture off the door.  Yes, I tried pulling at it a little, but it just rips and the remainder of the picture is glued to the door.  How embarrassing!  What in the world am I going to say to the ladies at the rental office?

“Uh..Hi yes,…see I have a slight problem…I have a magazine picture plastered to the back of my front door, and I  can’t get it off.”

Once they see that the picture is of a chick, and I’m the only one living in the apartment, they’re going to think I’m a little strange. Especially since men are usually the ones who have pictures of women lining the walls of their apartment.

Perhaps I should go in the office with workout gear on…and they’ll just think I’m obsessed with working out?

The point of this story?  Don’t stick things to your walls or doors that you don’t really want to get stuck there.  At least I physically can’t get rid of my goal picture—and for that I’m thankful. I now know that the image of the picture plastered to my door will never vanish from my mind.  Lucky me.

From the desk of an Indulge Full Throttle Lifer…

I have reached the “age” where I’m irritated with some hot flashes when its not hot in the house. I can’t wait to take my clothes off when I get home from work and put on some lighter clothing. I have also noticed the need for “time for myself” has become so much more important than it used to be. I like to be alone with my thoughts. If you know me, you know that I do not not like anything competing with my thoughts such as loud rock music from my staff, somebody talking to me while I’m in deep thought, trying to concentrate on writing some materials fro work and just the enjoyment of quiet time. I’m a fan of myself. I don’t know if you girls feel this way but I know that with the involvement of trying to maintain my youthful self there are activities I must do to ensure my fabulousness continues into my older years.

Symptoms of menopause are curious in the fact that hair grows out on the chin and other private areas that you certainly didn’t expect in your 30′s. Increased irritability when you don’t know why you snapped at someone that you really liked but maybe they just looked at you wrong. Normally this is a co-worker or family member. Wrinkles appearing around the eyes a little more deeper than the day before, sagging neck and cheeks ever so slightly, soft skin that has turned a little rougher due to the slower skin cell turnover, hyper pigmentation (dark spots on the face or body) and the bikini you used to where now looks like a thong. Geez, it’s not pretty naked girls!

The most noticeable item I see is the dark spots on the side of my face. I used to be cute but now a little more camoflage is needed to maintain my cuteness. They call this hyper pigmentation where you can either bleach it out but you can’t be out in the sun. So its a choice. Hmm. Sum or bleaching. Well, I was bad and chose the sun because it feels so good. Don’t tell Priscilla our skin care specialist she will have my hyde!

The word “older” has a different meaning than it did when I was 20. I used to think my mother was older like a dinasour. Now that I have reached 46 seeing older clients still active and involved in social activities and being social and still having an active sex life has more meaning. I see what their goals are and where they are at in their life. I see what I want and my goal was to retire from working behind the chair at 40. As you can see, I am working harder and have remained engaged with my business and feel better than I have ever felt mentally in my life. Now physically is a different matter. My sisters were always aerobic, active weight lifters and the results are that they have killer bodies into their 40′s. I on the other hand have struggled with the pooch in the front and the back boobs which are disgusting and since I turned 40, it got worse. No matter which diet or excersize program I encountered the weight was not coming off. Since this past year, I was determined to get the fat off. Will I be back to 125 lbs? I’m working towards that.  I wish but am happy to reduce the pant size at least by 1 size this year. Small steps. I often tell the nurses that care for my 17 year old son, I’m taking one for the team. This means that we are all in the same boat of the weightloss frustration. The one nurse is always purchasing the next diet program. God love her, I participate and get as excited as she does. We are a team and we are going to win 1 lb at a time. When we are down, we pick each other up, when we are up we high five in the kitchen. Whatever it takes is the mental game we play. I have a vision board that clearly describes what I want to look in that bikini. I’m sure you purchased some workout tapes that you were inspired to do every day until that day comes and you just don’t feel like it. Or the day that you are premenstral and you had to have the chocolate and didn’t think about the consequences of the bag of Hershey Golden Nuggets. I certainly didn’t when I was have a high emotional eating day until I had to do sit ups and couldn’t get up. I felt like a bus ran over me and swore I would never eat chocolate again. forget the moderation, NEVER AGAIN it wasn’t worth doing so many sit ups, crunches, lunges, and finally the frog position on the ball. Humiliation at its best.

As I was speaking to one of my wonderful customers whom I admire her figure and dedication to working out, she told me it would take 6 months to 1 year to see major results. I was shocked and angry at myself. I am going to stick to drinking lots of water and yes I’m still running to McDonalds every morning for my habitual large diet soda. Eventually, I will lose the soda and just stick with water and the protein in the morning. The experts say that the whey protein really helps weight loss. I say is this marketing or true. The one thing I absolutely value is the intense vitamins that you get in a drink. As we eat processed food we aren’t as a society getting all of the nutrients necessary to healthful living.

So girls, I now have a mantra. I AM WOMAN hear me ROAR! Lets take one for the team even if its 20 minutes here and there.  some solutions to our challenges are:

a. purchase an active peptide moisturization cream – we use Guinot products

b. Retinols or AHA’s gently turn over the cells whic h lighten the dark spots, smooth the skin texture and give the skin a glow.

c. Eye creams to add lipids to the thinner, more delicate skin tissue that becomes sensitive and dry

d. use hydrating serums or gels that add water and calm the skin when applied under moisturizers. I use serums because they go into the skin deeper especially during the summer months. I am dedicated to this.

e. Body lotions with AHA’s to smooth rough skin

f. Antioxidants, such as Vitamin C, A, E, or others to help fight free radical damage and encourage collagen production. This is important at our age.

So even if we take better care of our skin, we have other issues to contend with such as aging parents with their health problems, adult day care, empty nesting (my daughter graduated from college and moved to Texas) and now I have to think about funding a retirement program that the government may not be able to supplement even though I have contributed for a gazillion years while working. So I have shifted as many other woman have to looking at quality of life and maximizing my time and living values that are important to me. I also have shifted to choosing to be around really positive people. The environment you are in and around will affect or infect your health and mental well being. Protect it.

Moisturizing:

I have to comment….who wants to shave every day? Nobody that I know of. We have done countless Brazilian waxes. Do you know what a Brazilian waxing service consists of? The Brazilian waxing service consists of the entire frontal pubic area and the labia (the lips) and the back of the buttocks and everything in between. I know it may be uncomfortable to hear but when you need to be clean and ready for vacation you do what it takes. We have a numbing cream that will help reduce the pain but it won’t take it away totally. It makes it more bearable.

So, with that being said I want to offer some suggestions to have a successful waxing service. First of all come in after a fresh shower to keep your private areas clean. Do not use a harsh detergent to scrub because this may make your areas more sensitive and we know that pulling the hair out by the root is quick by not painless.  the same goes for all other body parts. We will apply a light antiseptic, the some powder so the wax and the strip will adhere and it pulls off more efficiently. Now shaving. Shaving is a low cost at home that normally you can use a soap and you know that I recommend our goats milk soaps that are so gentle on the skin that shaving is a glide. Always rinse thoroughly so you don’t leave anything left behind and use a moisturizer that will protect your skin and moisturize after this major exfoliation. If you have to choose between a shave and a wax, we recommend the waxing because it lasts up to 3 weeks sometimes longer  if your hair doesn’t grow in as quickly. Leave the hair grow out to about 1/4″  so that the waxing specialist has something to grip. Enjoy more free time with your waxing service.

As society is ever changing, one “accessory” that is here to stay is our cell phone. Once attached at our hip, it is usually now attached to our ears. You can’t walk very far without seeing a passing stranger talking incessantly on her cell phone.

Although it is convenient, cell phone radio waves may have a huge affect on the quality of not just our skin, but our health. In an article, written by Sue Mueller of Foodconsumer.org, Mueller writes that a study in Finland showed that radio frequency could be a contributor of altered proteins in our skin. Additionally, according to BioMedCentral.com, “radio waves could also be a factor of sleep disorders, headaches, or allergy-like symptoms.” Cancer is the big discussion after all. So many studies are underway to determine the affects of radio waves on skin and its ability to cause cancer.

Although there does not seem to be enough sufficient proof that cell phone radio waves are the main cause all of these physiological concerns, it does seem to make sense that issues would arise from our need to be on our tellys 24/7.

It doesn’t seem that the outcome is good either way. Radio waves, TV waves, Cell waves…they all could be main contenders in our battle with Cancer and other health issues.

Until we have some invention that prevents radio waves from accessing the proteins and cells in our bodies, we certainly shouldn’t brush this under the rug. Be aware of how often you are on the phone. Turn it off when you can do without it. Spend more time with family and friends and leave the phone at home.
